I think you're going to have to put on your mechanic's hat and get under the hood.

I did a quick search for "windows 7 explorer unable to open zip files"

and found:

There's probably an answer to your problem there, or maybe in the results of another search. Bottom line, I think, is that your Windows installation is damaged but can be repaired.

The simplest thing to do would be a Registry Merge. You can download this file, double-click on it and follow the prompts to merge it into the Windows Registry: http://www.sevenforums.com …s-restore-default_zip.reg (external link)

Ha...this is funny as the link is a zip!

The link I posted is not a zip... it has a .reg filename extension meaning that its compatible with the Windows Registry Editor. Its actually a simple text file designed to work with the registry.

You are very correct Sir (or Miss :)) this is not a zip, it was just titled that. Anyhow, I down loaded and ran whatever the registry thing was and Voila' "extract all" is now an option when I right click on a zip! And I can now do a straight import into LR just as it should be done. This is close enough for me! Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You folks and POTN are such an incredible resource.

You should do a virus check (if you haven't already) just to be safe. The registry was fixed but you don't know what caused it. Something mucked up the registry in the first place, right?
