Help ! my Canon sx 1 IS hd video play back jerks ?? I have tried IS off and on, got cam set to 'SW' and 'super fine' but when I playback in Quick Time it jerks. I have converted it to AVI but its still jerky. I have a sandisk extreme HD card (class 10) any help out there ? ( it does seem ok when played back on the camera's own little lcd)

If it's jerky on the computer but not on the camera the problem is likely with the CODEC (Coder-Decoder) on your computer, but if you have an older computer it might just be that the computer can't keep up with the demand.

What kind of computer do you have? What Processor, RAM and video card do you have? 1080p can require a fairly modern computer.

That sounds like an onboard video chipset, which is questionable for 1080p playback.

Are you running vista or Windows 7? If so, try downloading one of the free codec packs and rule that out first. But you are probably just seeing the limits of your hardware. Can you record in 720p instead and see if that plays back OK?

So, not enough pc power it seems. So would it be possible to record in 1080, then down size the file to play on pc but still keep the original 1080 ?

Yes, that is possible, but it takes some time to transcode. I use a free app called winFF to transcode some of my 720p files to 480p for DVD playback.

Is this a desktop computer? If so, a $30-50 graphics card upgrade might be a better investment.

That should be ample. I'd check the CODEC or the player you're using. I can run 1080p video from either my SX1 or my 5D2 for up to 6 min (the longest I've recorded) using QuickTime on a Toshiba laptop with the Intel graphics chipset and XP and no hangups. The graphics processor isn't all that important for simple things like playing back video. On-board graphics will do just fine.
Set this (external link) to 1080p and let it buffer completely before starting playback. It plays smoothly at full screen as the straight file from my HDD with QuickTime and also as a Youtube video.
