I had a chance today to compare the Kacey 22" BD using an Elinchrom DLite4 and a 430EXII inside my DIY flash holder that is fitted to work with my Elinchrom modifiers. Jerry set the dish up with the Chimera Elinchrom adapter.

Deflector only set out with only 3 of the 4 leg sections that come with the dish.

Not a hard core scientific measurbation test, but interesting to see how the speedlight and strobe distribute the light differently with the deflector location the same. I had the speedlight set with the WA lens down and the head out into the dish about the same distance as the strobe bulb would be.

Anyway, the dish was about 36" away. Both shots metered and each shot WB balanced in post.

Below is the DIY flash mount. The comp shots are the following post.

Here are the shots.
1) Elinchrom DLite4
2) 430EXII

BTW, The 430EXII was maxed out at 100 ISO F8, the DLite4 was at power 3 I think.

Thank you for sharing. Very interesting...
I do feel the exposures are slightly different, the one with Canon is too hot... maybe just me.

The speedlight looks overexposed a touch.

Other then that, I don't see how using eithe one would make or break a shot. The minute differences should get lost in the mix of the over all picture if the photo is great (subject, composition, post, ect...)

I was getting an inconsistent flash off the 430EXII. Not sure if it was the Radio Poppers or not. I'll do another test when I get a chance.

Even with bringing the exposure down in PP, I like the DLite look better. It's definitely a different look. I'm not sure how much a change it the deflector or deflector location would make.

Hey Ralph,

Looks good but I'm seeing a slight difference in exposure as well. It's most noticeable in the bright and specular highlights.

Great DIY, though.

Ya, it was a guessimate on placement, and the flash wash going off at a 1/3 stop inconsistency. I didn't have a lot of time to futz yesterday, to busy with a lighting assignment:D
