I upgraded to a new computer with Windows 7 and just now discovered that my copy of Photoshop CS2 will not run on Windows 7. I know that I can upgrade photoshop but is there something else out there that works well? Thinking maybe Gimp???? or similar?

You can fill the forum easily with GIMP versus PS talk but in short: you will have difficulty using it if you built muscle memory for photoshop. And GIMP has some very powerful functions and plugins that can rival what is available for PS but one thing is for sure: it has a lot less "autopilot" stuff.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

Try GIMP and see if you can work with it. If not, use it to hold you over while you buy CS5.5. If you're looking for a Photoshop replacement, there's not much out there that directly competes with it on every feature. But for actual photo stuff, consider Lightroom and Aperture. I much prefer Lightroom to using Bridge + Photoshop for working with a large number of photos.
