Shot steeplechase for the first time yesterday. I had no idea what I was doing, any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just finished looking at your website. Was this steeplechase racing or a fashion show? Looks like you had a good day. The great variety of photo ops is the fun part of shooting horse racing. My favorite shots were when you captured the horses just as they started to clear the jumps. Left photo above is late, right photo is late but better.

Great question. It was IMHO more of a fashion show. The organizers cared a lot more about my pictures of people then my pictures of horses. So you prefer pictures of horses actually on the jump??

About like the Kentucky Derby where hats seem to be more important than the horses except for two minutes of the actual race.

Yes, when the front legs are up under the body as the horse is about to go over the jump.
