You should soon be seeing a plethora of images posted. I won't be a contributor as I don't use LR, but I was able to greatly improve both photos with PS and NIK ColorEfex Pro.

I never did upgrade to LR 3, but this is what I did in LR 2. I am sure there is a lot more that could be done, but as you can see, with a few simple adjustments it recovered quite a bit.

Although I normally wouldn't use LR3 to fix jpgs, I did in this case because you specifically mentioned it. Also, you should understand the limits imposed by workng on such a small image and, in effect, trying to undo damage that was done before. If you want to post the original, everyone will be able to do a better job. At any rate, I corrected the WB, added a lot of contrast, reduced Exposure, set Black very high (54), raised fill light a little, set sharpening to 30/1.3/0/40 and with athe brush I desaturated her hair to get rid of the blue cast.

Sure you can!
On this one you might want to try a Graduated Filter from the top and straighten the horizon.

No, if you wanted to share your raw files you would have to use a file host or some other method. Then you can share the download link with people.
I use Dropbox.com (external link) for sharing files myself.

Here are a bunch of Video Tutorials to help learn LR 3

This illustrates using histogram adjustment on a JPG to alter the black point of the photograph (compressing the horizontal). In this specific case, Paint Shop Pro X2 has a One Step Photo Fix button, and this is how it fixed the photo...

..illustrating the fact that you do not even need to be very proficient in photo editing software and use of a RAW editor, to fix photos like this. I could have warmed the color balance as well, and done other things, but this was the one-button fix. I decided to post this simplified approach to fixing the photo, since tzalman beat me to posting a fix with LR tools.
