I just got off the phone with Canon service center and

they said it would be minimum $180 for them to look at my camera even though all I wanted done was get my viewfinder cleaned of some dust.

Yup, they have a minimum charge for service work of $180.

mine was filthy...I got a blower puffed it up in there & bought a new focus screen & put it in there...looks like new when I look thru there...I'm out about $40...

Minimum charges for work seems to be the norm these days.

Canon seems to be quite fair though, in that often times when the labor charges could go a bit over the minimum they charge just the minimum.

I took a Jeep to a Jeep dealer and told them about an issue I was having. They wanted $100 to ride it around the block and look at the front end linkage with the Jeep up on a lift.

Just how it is I guess.

I can typically fix stuff on my car. But I'm not taking my camera apart!  :o

Find a good local camera shop. Chat up the staff a bit and make sure they don't seem like crooks or morons, and see if they offer camera cleaning.
