Dumb questions coming, newbie here.

#1- What settings do you use?
#2- Does the rode mic record directly onto the 60d or do I have to sync the audio?

I'll be shooting a art party in a tattoo shop friday and need to know good settings for the rode mic and in camera audio which i'd like to be zero if possible.

Thanks.

records straight to the 60D -- but the auto gain control functioning will still be in place, so heads up on that. You could use it with a Juicedlink DS214 (http://www.juicedlink.com …mps-mixers-etc-c-66/ds214 (external link)) which has an AGC defeat as well as a headphone port so you can hear what you're doing.

make sure you put in a fresh battery before you record. Use the hi-pass filter (the furthest right on the Off/On/HPF switch), what that does is rolls off some low-frequency noise (hum and rumble, handling noise, wind noise). You might be able to use the +20 output level if it's a quiet shop, but otherwise use the +0.

I thought there's manual gain on 60D, I'm not sure coz I haven't checked yet. Just got my 60D last week and still busy with storyboards.

make sure it's plugged in all the way, and that you put in a battery.

lol, happens to the best of us. There should be a light that comes on (and stays on) when the mic is on.

Play around with the manual audio gain control. Test it by placing test footage into your NLE and watch the audio level and it should swings around -12dB to -6dB for your event.

If you can't get your sound up to that level, might want to try boosting it in post. If the result is not what you like, then get a preamp to boost the signal b4 it goes into your 60D.

Somebody should put together a basic guide about video-DSLR and audio requirement for it. It seems there are very repetitive questions going around and round. I can help out by oversight to do the review.

Cheers!

I've been thinking about it, but there is a large variety in technique and budget that it'd be hard to make one standard posting.

Also, as much as possible, try to avoid boosting in post. (It's not always possible, I know, but less boost the better.) The reason is signal-to-noise ratio. Let's just pretend for a moment that your recording system produces a constant hiss at -60dB. If you record hot-ish and your signal is at -6dB, then in post when you boost 6dB your signal is now at 0dB and your noise at -54dB. Excellent! However, let's say you record cold, and your signal comes in at -20dB. Now, you have to boost 20dB, and while your signal is at 0dB suddenly your noise is at -40dB. Eww!

I'll post a short clip tomorrow, I was 7ft in front of an acustic band(through amps) and its pretty loud/scratchy sounding. Left the mic on 0db did nothing in audio controls in camera as I'm still learning this. Regular conversation from people partying sounds great however. Stay tuned. Off to bed, thx guys.

Anyone watch the video? Can anyone tell me how to turn off the in camera mic all the way if possible as I'm guessing thats where the hiss sound is coming from?

Thanks.

Hey David, what do u mean by recording hot and cold? Is it that when ur recording hot, it's on uncontrolled environment so theres bg noise and cold in a studio?

Please clarify.
