hot = high levels, cold = low levels.

bob when the mic is off but plugged in it will hiss. when you unplug the camera will swap to its internal mic, but otherwise it would stop hissing. Also, you recorded that very, very loud and clipped the signal. If you have manual audio controls, turn it down a notch next time, otherwise use that -10 setting on the 2nd switch.

Let’s stop what you are doing and restart from the beginning.

First of all get your 60D into the manual audio level control, go to the movie menu to the second tab over and then scroll down to the “sound recording” bar and change it from auto to manual.

Then connect your microphone to the camera power it up and set the level switch on the rear of the microphone to -10dB.

Now while carefully observing the level meter on the 60D try recording a sound say a loud stereo playing and using the rear dial set level so the level meter is peaking at around the -12 mark on the level meter, if you cannot get the reading that high then change the switch on the microphone to 0 dB and try again.

Once you have that completed then roll a test clip and see how it sounds on playback and you should be good to go.

If that doesn’t work let me know and we will go from there.

Thanks I will try that, but how do you turn the cameras mic off to get rid of that hiss sound?

Once you plug in the external microphone the internal microphone is disconnected.

Well where is the hiss coming from? The camera (In my clip page one of this thread) you can hear the camera recording for the first few seconds, then you hear me turn the rode mic on. So is it somehow recording audio while the rode mic is off?

From internal mic to external mic, it switches automatically. And yes, 60D has manual gain controls, unlike the 7D.

Thanks to people here at POTN, I've gained more understanding to audio, specifically David (chippy). That hiss sound ur referring to is the automatic gain control (AGC). It will be eliminated when u do manual gain on the 60D, and do as what channel one described.

There could be many sources for the hiss, it could be from the microphone it could be internal to the camera it could be from the internal microphone but the first thing you need to do is get it (the camera) into manual audio level control and then we can go from there.

Let’s eliminate the variables and take this one step at a time.

Mic off but plugged in will hiss from a voltage difference. Unplug the mic from the camera. (note onboard mic will kick in.)

Hi, am new this forum. Am new to DSLR. Pardon my English if it sounds bad/rude.

I am facing the same issue. I pretty much tried most combinations with my rode videomic pro and 60D manual audio settings. But my question is same as of HastyPhoto. Where is the hiss coming from? I have a dead cat on my mic and i even tried inside a totally quite room with no luck.

I also noticed that despite switching off my rode mic I still get the hiss if I keep the audio pin plugged in.

Did u put in a 9v battery? Hastyphoto did that, so u might have done as well.

Mic off + plugged in = hiss. It's how it works. (Ok, really, it's a difference in voltage between the + and - terminals of the mic input caused by there being limited conductivity from the cable going to the vmp but with no voltage coming out, if you think of it that way, so what you are hearing as hiss is really a DC voltage offset.) If you are recording a clip and don't want audio, then either unplug the mic (which means the internal mic will kick on) or leave it plugged in and turn it on. You're going to toss the sound anyway, so who cares.

Guys, I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much!!
@Panda_stunter : yes, i inserted a brand new 9v battery.
@Chippy569 : Got that. If i dont want audio in my clip, there are more than 1 way to achieve that. But my worry is the hiss sound i get along with the audio. I dont get clean audio from my rode videomic pro under controlled conditions. ie, in my room with no electronic equipments around, including TV, Refrigerator, mobiles, trimmers...nothing...
