Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS/canon 70-200 2.8 is MK1

Looking for some advice.

I'm a keen amateur with a budget looking to upgrade my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - and there's no way on this earth I can afford a canon 70-200 2.8MK2!

So, that leaves either the new Sigma or the old Canon Mk1 (if I can track one down)

Does anyone have any comparisons or thoughts regarding the quality of the Sigma against the canon?

Btw...I'm not bothered about wether sealing, and I'm a 5dMk2 user

Yeah iv seen that, but that's comparing the sigma to the canon MK2, not the MK1

I'm going through a similar dilemma. I had the 70-200 MK I and I sold it not too long ago. I really miss the focal length. I was thinking about getting the Mk II but I still can't decide between getting the MK II or the Sigma 70-200 OS + Sigma 85 or the Canon MK II or now that I've seen some samples from it just save a little while longer and get the new 120-300 OS.

I never used to be a Sigma fan, but lately it seems like they've put out a lot of nice lenses. I tried the new Sigma 70-200 OS and it is a pretty amazing lens. It seemed a little better than the MK I on my 5D II, the build quality was great and the OS seemed very effective. AF was fast and I think the only time the MK I would be faster focusing would be when you're using the focus limiter.

I was ready to buy the Sigma last week, but I've decided to hold off a little longer and read more about the new 120-300 and see where I stand money wise in a month.

You have to take drev reviews with a grain of salt, he's a bit biased against sigma.

i ended up getting the used mark I b/c i got a really good price ($1500) from a friend who already bought the mark II.

if i would have had to pay more, i think i might have bought the sigma OS but i'm happy with my purchase. also, as someone said, the mark I has been used and loved by many. you can't go wrong.

Well done Mary! I though you were going to get the Sigma? Good choice you made. I got the MK1 second hand a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

Here in Toronto, a second hand IS MK1 can be found for around $1500, which is about the same as a new siggy 70-200 os. In this case, IS MK 1 will retain value better.

Somehow in Asia, Hong Kong and China, the siggy 70-200 OS is less than $1200 ( after tax everything). For this price, I'd buy siggy because its black color and $300+ difference.

What is your budget for the mk I?

Of course you're buying a second hand Mk 1, Which has no warranty and is used

Or you're buying a brand new Sigma 70-200 with...i think its a 10 year warranty in Canada isnt it?

From everything i see and read the Sigma is second only to the Mk II Canon, The Sigma doesnt get the love it deserves because the Mk II is just THAT good...if it was my money it comes down to either going whole hog and buying the Canon Mark II or just getting the Sigma and pocketing the $1100 difference

The Canon MK1 is about $1500.00 (sometimes less, sometimes more). The Sigma is $1500.00 before taxes. After taxes (in Vancouver) it is $1680.00. You are paying almost a couple hundred more for the Sigma.

In the UK (where I am) the canon 70-200 mk1 non IS is the same cost as the Sigma 70-200 OS.

The MK1 IS which can only be bought used (from eBay) is about £200 ($330) more for a second hand lens

Because I'm keen not to spend to much I'm very much heading towards the Sigma currently.

The sigma is a great lens you will like it I`m sure.
I have had mine for a few months now with absolutely no regrets.
