Is it flat 4-year warranty now or you still have to register the lens within 30 days or so to take advantage of additional 3-year warranty? I am planning to buy a used Sigma 50mm f1.4 lens. Thanks so much.

When I bought a new one a couple months ago, it said you had to register it online to get the extra 3 years, but I don't remember it saying it had to be within a set number of days.

if you're buying a used lens...then it doesn't really matter does it?

last i knew you had to register it online...but the warranty is non-transferable anyways...i mean i guess you could get the owner to give you a copy of their receipt, but it's all going to come down to the specific situation, so I don't really get the point of the question

I guess the warranty differs from country to country.
In Canada ( Ontario) the sigma warranty is transferable & the EX line is 10 yrs

It comes with the original receipt (and everything else) but it's already over an year. So, the only warranty I can get is extended one and that's why the question. And this is important too as this lens may have focus issues on my 5D II.

Edit: I heard somewhere you have to register it within XX days. Owner says he hasn't registered the lens with the Sigma.

there's nothing here that says it needs to be done in XX amount of days

All I can tell you is that I've got my 30 mm lens used when it was about 3 yrs old and sent it in for calibration with all the original paperwork (warranty card + receipt). Lens has been taken care of free of charge.

The warranty isn't transferable, so if they find out you aren't the original purchaser they don't have to honor the warranty.

I know but I don't think they care.

If they didn't care it wouldn't be printed on the warranty card, would it?

OK. If I send the lens in with original receipt are they going to ask me a copy my DL or something?

I know warranty is not transferable which is true for Canon one too but I have used it on occasions and I wasn't the original owner. All they wanted to see is a copy of receipt.

if your name isn't on the original receipt, you can always use the "my uncle gave it to me as a present" reason

I contacted Sigma about 6 months ago and asked what they needed for coverage. They told me that I needed to have the receipt even if it was registered. I asked about gifts and they said that they only honor repairs with the warranty. Now, they did not tell me that a gift had to be a brand new lens, so I don’t see how the name on the receipt will make any difference at all.

Maybe you bought the cheap filter attached to the lens and he gave you the lens as a gift for overpaying for the filter?
