I save my boxes because, no, you aren't alone, but why have we allowed this to become part of the camera culture?

it's buy/sell culture in general, not just camera culture. the same thing can be said for a big variety of other items.

boxed or not really has no relevance outside of the 2nd hand market.

Nope, I'm convinced that my pictures look sharper at 100% when I keep the box in the closet. (Color and contrast are better too, but it is just not as noticeable of a difference...) ;)

I'm off lining my cage with newspaper.

What other products need the original paper packaging outside of collectible toys?

However, when a camera or lens is sent to Canon for service, Canon would not ask for shipping it with its original box. Rather, Canon asks for protection only. And when the camera or lens is returned, it's not returned with any box like those original boxes, but inches of wrapping.

I can see the point why some people want the box, but I don't see the point why the reason is that it provides easy and additional protection.

Canon service centers ship many lenses and cameras every day and are set up with proper materials to do so. Most of us are not, making the original box/packaging a convenient and secure way to ship.

try do a eBay search on "LNIB" or "NIB". there are so many.

you don't "need" it doesn't mean it means no value to everyone.

also, the boxes do have some design simplicity to it that they do look nice. just look at the "show your boxes" thread. you can't really replace them.

when you ask why people don't keep their TV and computer boxes then, well, most of time they look kinda crappy, and big brown boxes are easily replaceable.

same effect goes to all apple products, for instance.

That's good to know. I've never sent a lens to Canon Service, but knowing they are not going to return the lens in the box it shipped in, I wouldn't use the original lens box.

No they would return whatever you send in. However, they ask you clearly what you should send in.
