Most of my experience has been sports shooting which means I 'get' longer lenses. Looking through a 35mm lens is quite foreign to my eyes. Picked up a gig shooting an after-prom party at our local HS. Strapped on the 35L and never took it off. Figure I have to learn sometime!

Please let me know how you think I did for the first time out using the lens. Granted, most of these are 'snapshots' in a sense, but that's what I was hired to produce.

1. Ambient light nearly wide open. Love the colors.

2. My goodness, the lens is capable of RIPPIN' sharp shots!

3. Still incredibly sharp and the WB looks good as well.

4. Is the flash balance at least acceptable in this image?

5. Flash balance looks better here for some reason ... light and dark all over the venue.

6. Used a homemade 'bounce card' made from white foam board. It was about 3" tall and 4" wide. Pointed flash at ceiling with bound card to force from light onto kids. Think it worked ok?

7. Last one ... promise! :D

Again, let me know if I did alright using a 35mm for the first time. Not used to getting quite so close to the 'action' to get a shot!

Thanks for looking and for any comments.

Honestly, I've really only had it for a month! Sold off the sports body and lenses and trying to focus more on events, people, small town outdoor stuff. Whole new experience shooting with the 'shorty!' Like the results pretty well, I must say!

Thanks! Got there early to give the 35mm a test-drive before the kids showed. Shot quite a few without flash, #1 was one of the more colorful and near wide-open shots. I'm really beginning to understand why people dig the huge apertures the lenses offer.

The rest of the shots of the kids were 'safe' for me.

Nice series. Did you do any sharpening in post?

Yes. Did the usual, lifted shadows a bit, added a bit of contrast, backed OFF the color in some instances and added a bit of unsharp mask to finish off the shots before saving.

They were still rippin' sharp as RAW files, as well though. I was really surprised. Probably should have posted a straight from camera image as well.

Thanks for the positive words on the shots.

Thanks and yeah, pretty sure the "L" lenses are meant to be used more in that fashion than strapping on a flash and setting the lens to f/5.6. Had to make sure I got representative shots of the event. Being the first real shoot with the 35mm, playing it 'safe' was my best option.

Hope so. Great lens. As mentioned, I'm not used to having to be so close when snapping a pic. Sports shooters ...
