Man!!! I have been back and forth 800 times over the last few days with whether to get glass or a new body and then opportunity conveniently presents itself (after I had decided to buy glass) and now I should have a very nice 1D3 with less than 10,000 clicks coming in the mail this week. I can't wait to feel/see the difference between the 1D3 and my 40D. I am really struggling with gymnastics pictures of my daughter so hopefully this will up my keeper rate.

On a side note, the only issue (if it can be called that) is that its missing the black plastic circle cover piece that goes on the side of the camera. I think I've seen metal ones on some people's cameras here but does anyone know where to get a replacement cover? Should I just contact Canon and ask them? I hate to be so anal retentive about things like this, but, well... the darn thing looks almost perfect with that one small exception :)

Having lost mine 3 times I now just plug it up with a plug of Blutack covered by a piece of black tape.

Has served me well for three years in ALL weather it is easy to apply and remove.

If it's the little rubber pieces, canon sells them. If it's the metal round thing where you screw in the cord strain relief doohickey, I have no idea. I've never removed any of them so there they sit.

While you're waiting, here's some light reading for you on the AF custom functions.

Gymnastics are freaking hard for any DSLR body, but don't be afraid to get up to 6400 if you need to. I use 3200 all the time for basketball and if you expose correctly AND fill the frame with your subject the shots can look really good.

I pretty much think everything is better with a 1d over my previous 40D, and I really liked that camera too.

Have fun!

I got a terminal replacement cap from here...

...the metal screw-in cap you have seen is for the USB cable holder when shooting tethered and really is too unweildly to leave on the camera.

Thanks for the link Rai33. That is exactly what I am looking for.

John, I'm still a little reserved about the fact that I didn't opt for a wide angle and a prime or two vs. the body, but I just don't think that I'd be happy with myself for passing up on yet another 1D3 deal. I love my 40D but it just doesn't cut it for some situations.

Cueball, you will love the upgrade I had 40D and upgraded to Mark III and glad I did and your 70-200 will be good for gymnastics that is what I use 95% of the time.

Did you used to have the 70-200 Ver.1? Did you notice a difference between how it performed from the 40D to the 1D3? I know its supposedly better on full frame but didn't know if I might see a difference from crop to crop.

I did have the Ver.1 I didn't really notice much difference on how the lens performed from 40D to 1D3 the pictures were great but you will notice that the 1D3 will focus faster and that will make the lens seem better if you get what I'm trying to say
