Picked up a new (to me, although the condition is unreal) 580EX and couldn't believe how intuitive it seems. I decided to play with it a little last night and since my two youngest wanted to go to the skatepark, perfect opportunity. Background aside (there's no spot for good b/g at this park), does it look like the ambient/flash balance is on or would you suggest moving one way or another in terms of achieving a natural light look? I think this one was wide open (f2.8), shutter at 1/250s and ISO around 400 with -2/3 FEC. These are SOOC, other than a crop and small capture sharpen in DPP (RAW @ 3, yeah, I didn't even bring these into PS since they are just snapshots).

to compensate for the bad backgrounds, I tried out some of Danny Munson's panning techniques (which I am arguably, pretty poor at). I think this was 1/50s and around f8, ISO 400 with -1 FEC. Top of my head since I just pulled these low res shots from my Facebook page so there's no exif in them but I think that's about right. And yes, dad has already discussed the risks of having a butterfly tat on your cheek at the skatepark .

I think the balance looks pretty spot on.
Nice looking kids.

Scott -they look pretty good. I like the first one best.

It all comes down to how much ambient you want in the shot. Using flash as fill results in the most natural looking shot, but sometimes overpowering the ambient (hard to do with a 580EX during the day - it's just not powerful enough) can result in some really cool looks.

Hey Scott - I think you nailed it..! When someone has to wonder if a flash was used in a shot like the first one.... you did it right ;)..! Nice job.

Thanks guys. Windy, wish I could take credit for that!

Dennis, totally agree that flash can provide so many options and some really cool stuff if you are willing to experiment a little. BTW, love the quote!

Bob, thanks as well. If you were really thinking that way, I'm thrilled since that was what I was aiming for.
