I gave a try to the 24-70f2.8L but I did not see any major differences in IQ with my Tamron 17-50mm on my 7D.
The angle of view on the crop is really different on close subject and found the 24-70 not being well adapted for crop sensor.
So I decided to sell the 24-70mm, and I am now facing 2 options for my new lens lineup :

Option 1 :
- Tamron 17-50 f2.8
- Sigma 30 1.4
- Sigma 85 1.4

Option 2 :
- Canon 17-55 2.8 IS
- Canon 85 1.8

What should be the best option ?

I'd go with option 3:

Sigma 17-50mm OS
Sigma 30mm
Canon 85mm

...in fact, I'll go with this option as soon as I find a good deal on Sigma zoom.

Canon 5D MkII | Canon 16-35mm f/4 | Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM | Canon 24-105mm f/4 | Tamron 70-300mm VC | Canon 430EX II | Benro A2682TB1

personally, i dont think the 30mm 1.4 is necessary with the 17-50mm 2.8 in the same kit because, at least me personally, i dont like big apertures on wide angles.

I'm a happy Canon SLR and Leica rangefinder user. bw!

I like this idea but a bit out of my budget for the moment...

Option one looks like a great lineup!

30 isn't even close to wide angle.

it's basically a fast 50 prime, you know then lens that has taken more pictures than any other....ever.

I can't fathom how anyone can operate without a good, fast 50. (which is what the sigma is on crop)

There are some primes that work great on crop, 24L, 35L, 50L...those are probably too expensive.

I'll recommend the same kit to you as I recommend to every crop user.

Tokina 11-16, Canon 17-55 IS, Sigma 30, Canon 70-200 variant.

To save money the 17-55 Is can be substituted for the Tamron 17-50, The nifty 50 can be used as a fast prime(although it's long on crop) and the 55-250 can take the place of a 70-200.

I think you're in the same dilemma I've been in.

It's the case of thinking your Tammy isn't good enough even though you're so pleased with it's performance. SInce the standard zoom is the "main lens" of many photogs it's only normal you consider replacing it all the time...

After begging myself to upgrade from my tammy to the 17-55, 24-105 and 24-70 (sigmas too) I realized that even a pixel peeper wouldn't switch... I think it comes down to luxurious aspects like focus motor noise and build (to that effect I keep hearing 17-55 users being a little underwhelmed by it's build)

Look at my line-up and you'll see what path I've chosen (for now hehe). I think on a full-body the transition is natural and welcome (to an L) but for a crop, though i'll admit i'd love me a 17-55 or even 15-85, I just don't see it as worthwhile considering the 85mm 1.8 price difference of 450$

I was also in the same delema ended up with 24-105l, 70-300 is. And I'm planning to add a tokina 12-24. Really wish I can replace my 70-300 with a 70-200 is f2.8

With your set up if budget is an issue why not give sigma 17-50 ex a try paired with the sigma 70-200 hsm os 2.8

I already owned a 70-200 f4L but ended selling it to buy a sigma 85 f1.4 because I was not really using the 100-200 range, but tried the 24-70 2.8L before and I am really thinking going with my first idea and the really attractive 85 1.4.

If you like wide angle, why not try the Canon 10-22. I shoot this on my 7D, and I love what I can do with this lens. The color, clarity and creative angles make this a great combo and a lot of fun to shoot. I am not the best photographer, but after reviewing some of the images I take with this lens, there are times I say to myself WOW.

just a few of my thoughts...

I have Canon 16-35 L 2.8 II on my 7D as my everyday lens - its wide enough for me. it's basically 24-52mm lens in full frame equivalent
And when I get 5d mk III with 24-70 MKII - the 16-35 will be my "super wide lens" on 5d, or i can leave it on 7d
