House fire yesterday...

Our house caught on fire yesterday due to an electrical fire. Everyone is okay but we lost quite a bit of stuff. Good thing we have insurance and everything will most likely be covered but I can't help but feel attached to my stuff especially my camera gear. Well I only lost a lens and lighting equipment, everything else I had in the car. I think I might buy a fireproof safe for them next time around. Anyone use one for their gear? Any recommendations?

Glad to hear you are ok. Put the lens back in its box and bury it so you can visit it and remember it for what it was.

100mm Macro, it's still pretty cold here so not quite macro season yet so it was still in a drawer.

Im sorry I dont use a fireproof case, but I just wanted to say wow thats terrible and has always been a big fear of mine as far as worrying about what I would lose that insurance couldnt give back. I am very glad everyone is okay and I hope you all recover well. :)

Best of luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong but just because a case is fireproof doesn't mean that it doesn't get really freakin' hot inside the case. I imagine a plastic lens wouldn't take to well to heat, even if it avoids the fire.

UL labs has fire ratings for safes. They will say something like 30 minutes at 1300 degrees which means paper will not combust inside the safe for 30 minutes with an outside temp of 1300 degrees. Paper will burn at about 180 degrees if memory serves. Don't remember exactly now. It's been a long time since I looked into it.

451 deg. F. That's the reason behind the title of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.

wow, sorry to hear that your house burned down. I'd be more worried about adjusting to the change in life rather than camera gear that was lost. good thing you had insurance for some of your stuff.

Good to hear that everyone's okay and insurance can cover most of your losses.

Something to keep in mind too is to backup the hard drives with your photos/memories. If you do stick a backup one in a fireproof safe... I'm not sure how much heat a given hard drive can stand.

Oh don't worry adjusting back to life is the biggest concern for our family right now. But I figure this as a part of adjusting back to life and the only relevant part to be discussed on this forum. Thanks everybody for the support we're just trying to take things as they come and not stress about it. :D

Not an endorsement or anything... just happen to look one up.

They mention digital media like CD, DVD, USB drives. No mention of hard drives being safe for 1 hr.
