Hi new to the forum and DSLR photography.

I have a 450D on the way. Was wondering if the following lens would work with it with an adapter. It is a Yashinon-DS 50mm f1:1.9 from a Yashica TL-Electro I used back in the 70's and 80's.

Would it be worth the while or would it be a waste of money for the adapter?

Thanks!!

You can get an adaptor ring on eBay for ~$15 upwards, more expensive ones will have an 'autofocus confirmation chip' attached which means you can get the beep and red square light up when you've got good focus.

But it will remain a manual focus lens and won't report aperture or focal length to the camera.

Also, a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II is super cheap and one of the most popular lenses for beginners.

(I'd probably buy the adapter AND get the Canon 50!)

I like making photos and sometimes I think I'm getting better... then I realise it doesn't matter. I like making photos!

You can adapt the lens just fine. It will work in AV or M modes where you set the aperture on the lens itself. Of course focusing is manual. They can be fun lenses to use and having a fast 50mm is great for portraits. For the price of an adapter I don't see why you wouldn't.

Personally, I would not waste money on AF confirm adapters as they are hit and miss with accuracy anyway. You can manual focus in liveview if you have a hard time using the viewfinder to do so. You can get a standard m42 to EOS adapter for like $8 shipped.

I have been using that lens for a little while now. I find it very difficult to focus, but using a tripod and zooming in with the live view has given me some very good results.

My experience has been that it really depends on which camera I've used.
7D - had a Katzeye - worked great
1D3 - had several Canon screens - worked great
5D2 - have a Brightscreen - flipped over to using live view.
1D4 - have a Canon split screen - works great

I suspect the reason is to do with the image size. Detail in the 5D2 is difficult to resolve...

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

For such a lens, not really. Especially since the cheap split-prism focusing screens are not any good past f/4 and incapable to render better than f/2.8 ... the good focusing screens from KatzEye w/ full features cost me $195.

Hmmm simple answer is no unless its an expensive one. Liveview at 10x is great but takes time and with some lenses (mentioning no name- nifty fifty) the throw is so short a little touch makes it in or out of focus, aspecially if at 1.8/2 and MFD, I'v converted some to EF mount from FD so it looks like I have an excuse to get that 7D and a Katzeye.
