ST-E2 with PocketWizard Plus II?

Could you use a Canon ST-E2 for the focus assist and also have a pocketWizard plus ii on to trigger flashes? Scenario I am thinking of: doing a photobooth at a reception in dark conditions - I want the ST-E2 for focus assist, but am not sure it would fire 2 flashes inside my Lastolite Hi-Lite. Any comments?

If you have a camera body with a pc port, you can. Just have the ST-E2 in the camera's hot shoe and velcro the Pocket Wizard to the top. String a pc cord from the camera to the pocket wizard and it should work. I know I saw that Neil Van Niekerk do almost this exact thing.

Exactky what I was looking for! I'm assuming if I don't have my 580EXII on camera, I could just velcro the PW to the ST-E2? Thanks so much!

You absolutely can. I shot like this at a wedding back in December. Man that was funnnnnnn. everyone was like ummmmm where is your FLASH ? And then when the bride saw the pictures in January, she goes 'OMG,we really thought you were screwing up our pictures,because you didn't have the flash on the camera'. I chuckled.

Why would you attach a pocketwizard to a device like ST-E2 that already communicates with off camera flash units without it?

To trigger your bigger strobes maybe !! Perhaps your flashes are in certain weird spots or position(s) where ST-E2 maybe not be able to bounce a signal to accordingly but a Pocketwizard radiowaves has solid reach. In my book ST-E2 is my golden nugget when it comes to focusing in low light and you do not want to bump the ISO to get more lights in to focus. There is tons of advantage in having a PKW+STE2 system setup like that.It maybe handy to those that need it. I can certainly say from personal experience it worked for me and yes I will try it again for what I need it for in the future. It will not work for everyone the same way, however those that know what they're seeking to accomplish with such rig are on point.

Very nice explanation except the high ISO part. using high ISO doesn't mean you get more light into the sensor and get better AF in low light.

Yes, exactly for this reason, as I stated in my initial post...I'm not sure the ST-E2 would fire flashes inside my Lastolite HiLite, and I'm sure there'll be other occasions when the ST-E2 might have it's infrared beam blocked.

That's a great story! I can only imagine the bride's confusion and angst till she saw your results!
