I use CS3 and will probably update to 5 soon but I'm not understanding why I can't open raw files using it----

I usually use LR 3 and then move into CS3 for final touchups but I can't open raws in CS3 and wonder if anyone knows why?? In other words, I can't circumvent LR 3----I've tried changing preferences to no avail---any ideas?

What camera, as your camera is probably not supported by ACR/CS3. You can d/l a & use the free Adobe DNG converter in the meantime.

Do you have a camera that came out AFTER CS3 was released? Raw is not a generic format ...

Yep, neither are supported by CS3. You can d/l the free dng converter - for pc (external link) and convert them to dng. Then you can open the dng file in ACR/CS3.

Thanks very much, but using LR 3 allows me to use CS3 and I really need to upgrade to CS5 I guess!!

Lightroom can do the DNG conversion, so no need for the external converter.

You should know, though, that CS3 Camera and LR3 are different in some of their processing so if you really want to use the CS3 Camera Raw for something you may want to "start from scratch" on an image rather than try to transfer Develop settings from Lightroom.

Yes, for non-Raw editing in the Photoshop editor the Edit in Photoshop function works fine. You can, in fact, open as a Smart Object which will give you the ability to open the tiff/psd in Camera Raw for those functions. Not the same as a Raw file but still can be useful when needed.

Well, sure you can upgrade to CS5! I actually am pretty content with my copy of CS3 though -- I haven't been feeling the urge to keep on the CS upgrade path.

Jim, be aware that when you have mismatched versions of Adobe products, like LR 3 and PS CS3, you can have issues. If you select Edit in Photoshop, whatever version of ACR you have (4.6) will be used instead of the more advanced raw editor in LR.

Chas, when you do Edit in Photoshop, you would typically choose to open a tiff/psd with Lightroom 3 Develop settings applied.
