Canon 5D Mk1, 40D or 50D - tethered and the new EOS Utility?

Hi,

I was wondering if any owners of the three cameras in the title (5D Classic, 40D and 50D) could help me out.

I need to upgrade from my 300D & 450D kit and I will be shooting a lot of tethered studio work of dancers, with the choreographer behind the screen giving directions to the dancer (like 'stretch those toes') or to me (like 'wait a second longer to allow her to extend properly')...

Preferably I'd want a 1Ds mkii/iii for this - but that's out of my budget, so the options are the three listed.

Now to the question:

The new EOS Utility (v2.10) allows a checkbox that says "only send JPEG, when in shooting in RAW+JPEG'.
http://www.p4pictures.com …canon-software-available/ (external link)

Now, the old 5D took ages between shutter press and preview on laptop screen when shooting in RAW - but, can this new EOS Utility feature speed things up?

Say, if you're shooting a RAW + Medium Jpeg, can anyone actually TEST and time the delay between shutter preview with this new version of the software?

Preferably I'd like replies regarding all three cameras.

Thank you!

Eh, I can give it a shot tomorrow or later 2night.

I'll try the 5d and 50d.

Thanks, that would be awesome, especially the 5D - basically if it would be viable to use with a client infront of the screen or if it would interrupt 'shoot flow' :)

I was just told on a swedish site where I asked the same that the 40D could go down to 1.6sec with raw+small jpeg, so it's looking good... (but I assume that anything below 2sec will be computer hardware related)

But noone there has answered 5d/50d so would be really greatful!

I would assume that the 50D would give you the best speed performance as to transferring the pics to the PC -- I know the 5D has a slow speed and I'm not sure about the 40D but I'd imagine that would be the best of the three.

Also, the 5D is not natively supported by some of the newer Windows systems. I've seen people get workarounds running, but I've never tried.

Oh, and the 5D does not have Live View, which to me is a pretty important part of tethered shooting.

oh, live view is completely unimportant for my kind of photography. The "tetheredness" is for 3rd party viewing, such as a choreographer or an AD... I assume live view would be good for product or macro shooting though.

But yeah, I think 50D has by far the fastest transferspeed, but if a small jpeg can level out the 'transfer' delay and leave it up to computer hardware delay for rendering the image, then it's a 5D.

And I'm on Mac. :)

Well, OK, I love my 5D, but Live View gives you that real time display which is very nice tethered. As to the transfer speed on a jpeg, well, dunno -- you may need to test one out.

The 5d is usb1.0 so the transfer is going to be slow no matter that software you use.

The 40d and 50d are both usb2 so transfer speed with be much faster.

Software may help rendering times but that will also depend on the computer's specs so any test will differ from what you might experience.

Yeah, but in a small town such as this... not many of 'em around :) So I'm asking all you helpful people :D

Even when tethered - in this case - I'd have my eye glued to the viewfinder, so Live View is little importnace to me... But yeah, I would love say a 5D mk2 with all it's bells and whistles, but my budget is nowhere near that. :-/

Are you sure about the usb 1.0?

Canon's spec and all sources list usb 2.0, however the newer two bodies have a much newer processors (and probably newer 'other bits') that speeds up handling/sending of files..

My 300D has usb 1 and that takes over a minute to transfer a 6mp rawfile. Somehow I don't think that's the case with a 5D...

Okay, they do list it as usb2.0 but the actual transfer speeds are akin to usb1.1. I'm lucky if I get 1.2MB/s which was about the throughput of usb1.1 and hence my incorrect assumption. There must be some limitation in the camera that prevents full usb2.0 speeds for whatever reason.

My guess would be that all other single-didgit canons had Firewire, usb 2 was 'relatively' new at the time and they just 'threw something together'...

But 1.2 MB/s throughput is exactly what this thread is about - theoretically, that's enough for a small jpg to go swoooosch to the screen, where as a raw might as well take the train. :)

50d is way faster than the 5d. Did a quick test before leaving for work. And it was really slow with the 5d. 50d gave me really fast and nice results even whilst shooting RAW+JPEG. Just make sure you have enough HDD space free, I did not lol.

Aww crap. So even a RAW+small jpeg on a 5D is too slow to be workable. Shame.
