What's the best way to get the right focus in a nightclub?

I usually get asked to take photos at Nightclubs with near pitch black lighting, with minimal light coming from either equipment or strobe lights or lasers. I use a flash and pair it with a 50mm 1.8, but focusing is still a pain in the ass.

Since I have to manually focus, I'm just wondering, are there any other methods of getting the right focus manually in a dark setting?

Yep.
Focus assist (this means: speedlight on camera + One Shot AF) and also, I'd use a wide angle for this type of shots. Not that wide an aperture needed. In fact, I stop down my 17-35L to about f/4 for DoF.

Damn, I only have a 270ex and it doesn't have the AF light screen like the 430+580. I do get limited bounce though. As for a wide angle, I don't have one and was hoping to buy one this week but I haven't heard back. I could try and rent one but it's a pain in the ass. No L lenses here, I'm just starting out.

I've managed to get alright shots with my 50mm + 270ex. Like here (external link), or here (external link). It's just getting it focused right that kills me. (A bit soft because of the resize and I shot it wide open.)

People are definitely on point with wide angle. This will allow you use a larger aperture yet get more DOF than using say a 50mm lens. The best practice for you since you have no focus assist light would be to focus on an object that's well lit at fixed distance you deside(perhaps 5ft) then once your focused set your camera lens to manual focus and just judge and make sure you subjects are always about 5 ft away. Good Luck!

No kit lens. I bought my 1D body used from Adorama by itself

A. 1D. Yep, no kit lens for that one ;)

You could look for a used 28 or 20mm prime…

I bought a 28-105 from here but the seller hasn't shipped it yet.

But I cranked my 50mm to 2.8 and got a few great shots
