The 85/1.8 is one of my favorite lens right now. I'm borrowing it from a family member, and find it to be great outdoors. All the following portraits were taken with the lens:

I know my pics will still suck, but at least they'll suck a little less ;)

Actually having heard the feedback such as yours its the AF speed that made me want the 1.8 all the more.

Purple fringing I can deal with, but from whats been said its only really visible if you look hard isn't it?

All my thoughts as well (including the sucky pics! :)). You are going to be very happy. The AF is incredible!

7D + 85 f/1.8 is a match made in heaven. If the 7D is setup correctly, focus should be extremely quick and equally as accurate.

I recently traveled to Paris with both my 85/1.8 and a rented 135L. While I had tons of fun with the L and used it for most of my outdoor shots, I think I got more "wow" factor from some of the few shots I took with the 85/1.8. It is a great lens: sharp, fast-focusing, light-weight. I bought it (new) a year ago for like $380 or something, and at that price it is a steal. Definitely one of Canon's best value lenses.

Here is a shot I took recently of a colleague:

85 1.8 with 7D is a superb combo!
i tried it the 1.8 from a friend for a week and it is awesome. AF is lightning quick, but i got a good deal on the 1.2... :)

The 85 makes a good combo with a 7D but a much better combo with a FF such as a 5D(2) -;)

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

most of the rest were probably around the f1/8 - f/2.8 mark

I currently own the 50 1.4 and am thinking of grabbing this lens and getting into more formal portrait work. Seems its perfect for head and shoulders shots, but is it worth just keeping the 50 and cropping/getting awkwardly close to subjects all the time?

I have this lens on my 50D and now also on my 5D Mark II and it's simply stunning on both! If I knew this at hindsight it would be the first lens I'd ever buy, really... It's that good! Very sharp, even at 1.8, fast and accurate AF, fairly compact and the price is exceptionally low considering what you get for it in return! If I had to buy this lens again I wouldn't even hesitate!

I am actually selling mine (it's on the classifieds). It's a cracking lens - most of this shoot was with this lens: http://johnloydall.co.uk/photoshoot/ (external link)

Only reason I'm selling it is to go towards the Zeiss 100mm macro f/2... now that lens is another story.

I use my 85 1.8 on a full frame 5DII. I also have the 85 1.2L but kept the 1.8 for times when I'm shooting more action stuff and wanted the faster focus and don't need 1.2.

I got mine (eventually), sent by a pretty grumpy seeming guy which arrived in a plastic bag! but still it got here and is very good.

These are a couple of pictures taken with it, oh and the second was by my daughter (she's 3!!!) and I think its better than mine :)

It is a wonderful crossover lens for crop and full frame.

The 85/1.8 is an awesome lens! The only thing that is a bit weird about it (and it has nothing to do with the lens itself) is I find the focal length awkward indoors on a crop. Don't get me wrong, this lens will not be leaving my bag anytime soon. I don't use it often, but when I do I love it!
