About a month ago I decided to get a tripod specifically for traveling, hiking, and backcountry skiing. What started as a simple search ballooned into a full-scale overload of choices. As I did more and more research, and read more and more reviews, the choices oscillated between seemingly straightforward to wholly unmanageable.

To help prevent my brain from shutting itself down, I started a spreadsheet for easy spec comparisons, and what began as a comparison of tripods within a single brand grew to four brands and counting. The sheet currently has tripods from HorusBennu, Benro, Feisol, and Photoclam. I figured this might be helpful to others, so I transferred it into a Google Doc spreadsheet and here is the link:

My specific set of search criteria determined which brands and tripods I focused on, so this sheet currently contains affordable tripods suitable for traveling and hiking. I've omitted whole brands that weren't of interest to me, and some tripods within the included brands that didn't fulfill my criteria. At the same time, I ended up including many tripods that I knew wouldn't make the cut, simply because I was already staring at the specs and thought it would be a waste not to.

I'd like to continue to improve and expand the spreadsheet, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to do so, I'd be happy to hear them. Hopefully this is useful to those who are in the market for a new set of legs.

Thanks guys. I've fleshed out the Benro section some more and added a few other models to the other brands.

i started something like this when i was looking for a new tripod also. it was better than having 30 different tabs open in chrome or firefox. my initial list of 30, became 14, and eventually made it down to 1.

So to those who have done something similar, whether or not in spreadsheet form...what did you end up buying? Can save us some trouble! :)

Yeah, I suppose so. But what else are you supposed to do on your honeymoon?

I'm pretty sure once you start creating spreadsheets that you always end up with the Gitzo GT5531. It's inevitable.
