There is always a risk when dealing with a private party and usually the risk increases as your asking price increases. When I've rented properties in the past, I always thought it wise to rent slightly below market and reduce the risks.

I'd recommend that you determine the typical sales price for your lens, then knock 10% off of that and offer to include PayPal fees and shipping. You'll have offers from numerous buyers and there will certainly be one or two that are just as reliable as Adorama. True, it might take you a few minutes to weed through the candidates but you should be able to do an easy, clean deal and make quite a bit more than Adorama would give you.

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

They have an 800 number. Is there any reason you will not call them and get an actual price from them? Then you could ask about the price of the lens you are interested in after the trade-in.

As far as I read on their website you have to send them the lens and they quote you after it has been received.

Well, I put it on CL, although I doubt there would be any takers in the area, but who knows :) I hope I have the chance to weed through candidates :)

I sold a lens back to Adorama once, as part of an upgrade. As others have described, you will not get anything near to what you could sell it for or anything you would consider "fair value". If you have the time and put a little effort, you will definitely get a better price.

I do not plan on selling to Adorama or any of the retailers again, as at the end of the day, it seems to be the standard business model.

This board has For Sale section too.

I have been happy with everything else I have purchased, traded in a 17-85 for a 15-85 refurb during rebate season. That is when I started looking online and found my way to POTN amongst other sites and realized how much little they offer.

I CLd once, much easier in the NYC area, and "gave" away my nifty trinity (18-55,55-250,50 1.8) to a student for 3C.

You're going to take it in the shorts selling it to any dealer who is going to resell it. These sell easily here for $425-450 ( I paid $430 for mine). You're going to have to ship it either way so why not sell it directly to another photog here and pocket all the cash?

From what I've seen people get offered approx. 70% of an average sale price here on the forum when they sell to Adorama.

Yup 70% of the going value depending on the condition and demand of the type of lens. I sold them 2 lenses all bec I had a hard time selling them, my self. But yours is not a kit lens and would easily be sold in the sell forum just price it to sell.

Gear list: 7d, 50d, xti, EOS 66 film, Canon FTB,sigma 18-35 1.8 art len, EF 24-105L, 70-200f4. Manfrotto 190xpro, sirui g20x. BR metro.

The 100mm USM macro sells easily here. It's one of Canon's sharpest lenses and doubles as a nice portrait lens.

Well, I am new to the forum so many buyers may be hesitant to purchase from me. At the same time there is no safety selling on POTN, so pretty risky for me too :)

I love CL - the buyer can physically inspect the product and I get cash in hand. But I am not so sure if I could find a seller here, we don't even have a half decent photo store :( I guess I can keep it on CL for a couple of weeks and then take my chances here...

For a lens of that value it isn't a big deal and you do have a posting history. You really should try it here, take a few shots of the lens, maybe a sample picture or two shot with the lens, and put it up. I bet it will sell. I'd buy from you if I didn't already have one (and I won't part with mine).
