I should learn how to use a flash. Either that or use a better camera and fast lenses :)

^ Buck of Avarice to Lace... a very loud, screaming, punk/emo band - from Regina, SK. I think this image captures the overall feel of them quite well.

^ The Riz of Ultimate Power Duo... a jumpy punk band of 3 people including a rather attractive female drummer - from Saskatoon, SK.

^ Not sure of this guy's name. He is from the New Jacobin Club... sort of a death/heavy metal band from Saskatoon, SK.

^ New Jacobin Club again. Despite their appearance and genre, they actually played some pretty good music.

^ Same guy from two images above.

So yeah, that was my first concert ever (shooting wise). I was assigned by the Uni's newspaper, so got in for free. Any tips in case I end up doing something like this again would be well appreciated! I think the exif info is preserved in the jpegs if you would like to take a look.

#1 and #3 are really good - loads of drama. Since they are all in red anyway, why not go the whole hog and convert them to bw. I bet they'd look even better

The first thing I would suggest is KEEP THE FLASH IN YOUR CAMERA BAG!!!

Overall, those shots are pretty damn good. The first two might be a tad soft, but still pretty good.

Remember, one of the most important things you want to capture is "the mood", which is going to be affected, to no small degree, by the stage lighting. Using a flash will negate that a great deal.

Here's a shot done with a flash:

It's not a bad shot, but it just as easily could've been taken in a garage as opposed to on a stage in a bar.

Now, here's another shot taken with no flash:

There's a definite difference. The second shot would've been ruined, with regard to "the mood" with a flash. It still would've been an okay picture, but the effect of the stage lighting would've been lost.

Take a look at some of the pictures when Dwight posts. He shoots some amazing pictures, and I'm pretty sure he leaves his flash at hom.

So, I say keep moving along as you are. By not using a flash, you'll stay on the right track...

Yeah, I love the mood of concert photos... but the lens I was using was very slow and I think all of those were taken with an exposure compensation of -1 so they turn out a little more sharp.

I'll try the B&W conversions :)

Thanks for the input!

These shots are great, full of life, you have a good eye for 'the moment'....certainly a faster lens would serve you well,
Roger.

Spearin, Steve is right that I don't use flash at the casino ... but I always have it in my case with extra charged batteries in case someone needs a group photo with the talent or something ... but I am generally forbidden to use it during a performance ... besides stressing the audience, as Steve makes the point so well, it destroys the ambience totally, although sometimes a bit of fill flash is useful. In my other venues I do a mix but I don't ever remember preferring the flash images ... but (notice I use that over and over ... there are no absolutes!) I have gotten some head shots where the flash allowed me to get a good "portrait" that I could use to mix in with all the mood shots. So, have the flash in the bag and use it very sparingly. Watch for good buys on fast primes (I am currently diverting funds to fast primes from other equipment that is on my wishlist because of the demonstrated value of these lenses by Steve, Mike, Angus and others) on eBay, FM (Fred Miranda) and here on POTN's marketplace forum.

Cheers Roger and Dwight :)

Tonight I shot some other bands (2 day event) and worried more about composition and such now that I had a good feel for the place. Once I get the photos from my editor (it's the University newspaper's camera) I will post up some more examples.
