I hear a lot about insuring lenses, just wondering if everyone is buying it via home owners insurance or another carrier. Anyone have a good experience with a particular insurer that they can recommend? Thanks!!!

my current home owners insurance had limited coverage on camera and lens so just got personal artical policy from state farm. They charge you about $1.35 per every $1000 that you want to insure per year.

I have an additional policy with USAA. Costs about $45 a year to cover all my gear from damage, theft or destruction.

Mine is through The Hartford but it's a business policy that, beyond gear replacement, includes liability coverages as well as riders for office gear like computers and printers.

You probably meant per every $100.

So your saying if you insure $10,000.00 worth of equipment it will cost you only $13.50 a year? Its per $100.00, not $1,000.00.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

at what point would you recommend getting camera/lens insurance because I have no where near the total cost of gear that some people have?

What all does it cover? Theft? If you accidently drop it in the ocean? How did you go about getting it? What info do you give them?

I just got the state farm personal articles policy, and it supposedly covers just about everything including theft and accidental damage. I asked the agent how they were able to do that, and the gist is that if you make too many claims, they'll drop you. Looking through the fine print, it doesn't cover war or nuclear explosions (I was amused about the latter, because it specifically notes that even accidental nuclear explosions weren't covered).

I got a rider from Allstate on all camera gear, including the darkroom equip. It also includes the firearms and a two million liability if I happen to shoot a burglar. It is for full replacement value with a 100.00 deductible. Runs about $125.00 a year.

The personal articles policy from State Farm is great because it has no deductible. I have that policy as well.
