Nicknames are part of most cultures,, some appropiate, some not so.
Aussies are huge for nicknames. For example Bluey for someone with red hair or Curly for a bald guy. I had a mate, a dentist who was called Teeth (bearing in mind his name is Keith). Another friend had a dog with three and a half legs called Three Fifty.
Last year in one of my classes I had two students, girls called Beer and Party, my teacher's assistant ( a girl) was called Pepsii.
