Several weeks ago I booked a hotel room in Bar Harbor for 2 nights, planning to spend some time in Acadia National Park in Maine. When it came close the weather report predicted rain for 2 of the 3 days I'd be there. Since it seemed like I was going to get only 1 sunny day I went to bed at 6:00 PM, woke up at 12:30 AM, and hit the road around 1:30 AM for a 5-hour drive. I wanted to be at the summit of Cadillac Mountain by sunrise, since it's reputed to be one of the best sunrise and sunset spots in New England.
After 4:45 of driving (289 miles) I made it to the summit in time, but the sun didn't.
I never did see the sun that entire day, and I never saw a sunrise or sunset. I saw a patch of blue sky that I could cover with a fingertip. It lasted about 4 minutes and disappeared behind the fog which permeated the entire island.
Even still, I drove the Loop Road almost twice and visited many spots on the island. Some spots were very foggy, other weren't so bad, and I did manage to get some pictures. Many were taken out of desperation, but I did get some shots where and when the fog faded a bit.
The next day was a bit better - the sun shown brightly all day. But only in the harbor of Bar Harbor. Driving 1/2 mile in any direction hit fog again, though it wasn't so thick as the first day. I did manage to see some islands and I got plenty of shots of the harbor.
Around noon I figured that I'd head home so I set off to shoot one last place, Duck Brook Bridge. I finally arrived at the bridge over 5 hours later - you can't drive far in Acadia without pulling over to take a picture.
I arrived home last night at 11:30 PM, 46 hours after I left. I spent 11 hours driving to and from, 6 hours sleeping, and all 23 hours of daylight driving around the island. Total was 768 miles for the trip.
Talk about a whirlwind tour...
