Is it just me or is it getting difficult finding Lexar CF FW 800 card readers?

USB 2.0 is simply no good - just waaaay too slow compared to any FW.

If anyone can suggest a good FW 800 CF card reader I'd appreciate it.

I have the SanDisk FW 800 reader. Love it. About $100 on Amazon.

Thanks, looks really good and seems to be labeled as "FAST" by just about every reviewer!

The trouble is that, if they're anything like most Amazon reviewers, they've no evidence that it's fast - apart from what the advertising tells them. Here's an example - LINK (external link). This USB reader has 21 5-star reviews on Amazon and it's complete and utter crap. I should know because I bought one and tested it. It's slower than my non-UDMA, supermarket-bought, no-name, POS USB reader

I have the SanDisk and get around 50 MBs/sec. read-time with a 300X card. Here is a recent thread about USB 3.0. I'd say the verdict (hype?) about them is still out, the last comment shows the Delkin getting 60 MBs/sec. which is just slightly faster than my SanDisk FW800.

Here's another thread with a read-time of 40 MBs/sec:

This is a good point. I thought mine was defective or just plain slow when I first tried it, but I was using one of my free no-name CF cards I got with my 50D from Canon when I ordered my camera. Popped in a SanDisk Extreme 60mb/s card and it's a world of difference. I think it does depend on what card you use, which is lame IMO, but it's still faster.

Why did SanDisk discontinue the FireWire Reader?

Presumably because they sold so few that it wasn't profitable.

probably there is statistically litte market for it. PCs all have either USB 2 or 3.

Only the Mac world pushed FW and now Apple is moving over to Thunderbolt. I have yet to hear of a Thunderbolt card reader. With luck you can find a Thunderbolt to FW converter and continue to use FW800 readers (if you can find them).

USB 3.0 reader from SIIG, I'm getting well over 80 megs/sec with a Sandisk Extreme Pro 16 gig card. Sustained. When I plug in a Sandisk Extreme (non pro) 60 Meg/sec card, 32 gigs can be offloaded in about 3 minutes. Sustained read speed is well over the 60 advertised mark. My Calumet firewire 800 card readers were never THAT fast.

The Lexar Firewire 800 was replaced by the USB 3.0 Professional dual slot card reader.

I have a san disk fw800 reader, cost me about $90 and it has lasted me a couple years now, I was going through too many USB readers and wanted some thing a little nicer and another added benefit i realized after the fact is I have a newer mac book pro with 3 usb ports and 1 fire wire port, I kept running out of usb ports with my wireless mouse and iphone and other random things plugged in, the fw reader frees a port up.
