Having been an Aviation photographer for many years I still find it difficult to find a way of getting the best shots.
In this thread I find the panning and getting blurred background only emphasises my thoughts.
The background being blurred can make the picture look very "busy" and can distract from the aircraft. I know what the impression of speed is supposed to convey, but unless the picture is cropped so as to show the aircraft to its best I feel the picture can lose its effectiveness.
Aviation photographers always have to contend with things getting in the way like out of focus building, pole, etc, sky that is wrong, sun in the wrong place.

I'm not an aviation photographer by any stretch, I just like taking photos of planes. But my take on it is the opposite. I find by slowing it right down to blur the background into oblivion, you make it less busy. All those poles, buildings you speak of are less obvious when they are motion affected. I normally don't want to look at a plane taking off with a busy sharp airport in the background......unless you use Jays first photo of the F-15 as an example of course, as the whole pic works perfectly.

But how boring would his last shot be if he shot it at 1/1000th? no prop blur, and for all intents and purpose it may as well just be sitting on the runway for the shot. This thread was started to simply showcase this type of aircraft image. Of course if the plane is against a blue sky, then the effect is lost, but that's why most who understand the thread ideal, post images with motion blurred backgrounds in them.

Yes it is hard to do really well, that's why I like practicing it. When I can grab a slow pan as sharp as Jay and the like can do, then I'll be a happy chappy!

nice picture Jay, I'm guessing he has his gloves attached to the bars, as it appears that he has three hands :-)
