Hi everyone,

Trying to improve my portrait skills and would appreciate any tips or critiques on my lighting and background. Lighting was a canon flash shot thru an umbrella camera right. I also think a had a low powered flash with a gel (gray or blue) pointed at the background. Camera was XSi, nifty fifty, 1/200, f 5.6. How could I make this photo better?

maybe by losing the space to the left. Face appears too bright o nthe right also.

I think you did really well - you will get comments about the dead space - that's what you get for landscape orientation Try these in portrait.
Given that, I would make it as little as possible and give it more contrast with the model...more crop & make it darker. Interesting because I find the side of her face just right - monitors??
I also think there is more detail to be brought out in her hair with PP....dodge it or use levels.

Okay, I've cropped the photo to portrait orientation but I've not been able to darken the background or bring out the highlights in her hair. I'm pretty new to photoshop and really don't know what I'm doing. Any tips would be appreciated. Also, feel free to edit the photo. Thanks again.
