In recent times a couple of local clubs (rugby, football and league) have asked whether they could use some of my pics on their web sites. They want to know how much I would charge them. I do NOT ever intend making a living out of photography, but would like to get back a little to help fund better lenses. I also do not wish to undercut the "going rate" so that professionals are forced to cut their prices.

Please me an indication of what you think I should charge them for web page images.

Also how do I ensure the only use them on the web page ??
I think if I supply them with a reduced resolution image (say 200 k Jpeg) this may do the trick.

It's hard to say as each area and each use is a bit different. So what ever example I give you will not have much to do with the prices in your country. And the price would also be somewhat related to how many images they want and what their budget is. But a range I've sold images for similar uses is between $5 and $25 per image when a client is asking for a gallery of 20 images or so.

I'm assuming the club members are the ones you'd be selling prints to from future (and past) games you shoot?

If so, I provide a free handful of web-sized images (720px) with my logo (and URL) for the club's website. They link the image to my site where the players can see more pictures from their games and order prints.

Don't think of it as giving a free picture. Think of it as receiving a free ad, perfectly positioned for your target audience. Win-win.

Thanks for the advice.
It is exactly what I have decided to do. The club will only be using the pictures in their gallery and electronic newsletters. I am going to provide them with watermarked images (max size 800 px) at NO charge.

If people want prints after that then it is a different matter.
