Insurance is probably the best way to go. I realize that my camera gear is worth more then my car and my car is insured so it makes perfect sense. Luckily I don't have to pay for uninsured photoist :-}

lol, i'm in the same boat. Didn;t have any claim yet and hope I won't but it gives me a good peace in mind knowing I have it there. My car is worth half of the cost of my gear:)

One thing that puzzles me, I suspect it is a mistake in the article, was this statement:

... the image you give it needs to be an unaltered original jpg file - which is a problem if you prefer to shoot in RAW format.

I shoot in RAW and I know that the Camera Serial Number is included in the JPG images that are created by DPP. This is one reason why I keep EXIF data turned off in my flickr site. (My camera is not stolen, but I value my privacy and try not to flood the internet with personally identifiable information).

I can imagine that whoever explained this part to the author didn't want to get into the details, but it probably would have been more accurate to say something like: The images needs to include the the complete original EXIF data, including the Camera Serial Number, which is often discarded in post processing.

Read again. Unless I'm mistaken, not a single person in this thread has successfully be able to find a file with this program/app. Didn't work for me with some test images I had up on Flickr.

Good concept, poor in practice

I don't want to find my camera if it's stolen. I've got this magic stuff called "insurance", and I'll get a new one from my magic "insurance".

What if there are un-downloaded photos on the card?

i don't shoot anything important, wouldn't matter. if they were important, the claim would go up.
