Hello,
I have an SX 30, and still learning its features,one thing I cant figure out is
in manual mode, using Macro can the manual focus be used?

Coinnut - Must agree, the SX30 Manual, Page 73 - doesn't explain the Macro mode at all well.

While Canon has combined my SX10's Macro and Super Macro modes in the SX30 - I'm guessing that MF still works in Macro.

That is, with both modes in the SX10, once in them, MF can be selected, then use the ring around the 4-way pad to adjust the focus. There's a 'scale' on the right side of the EVF/LCD.

In the SX30 Manual, Page 89 shows the use of MF. That's quite similar to the SX10/SX20.

So at a guess, that will work with Macro in the SX30.

Perhaps an SX30 user could check that and verify for us.

Dave.

Just from quickly playing with my SX30, it appears MF is seperate from macro... but you can manually focus down to macro distances so in essence your macro is built into the MF mode. Not 100% that's right but that's the way it appears to me.

I was thinking the same thing,taking shots of an ant, I attached the best one,
at its closest.
The ant is @1/4 "long and 3-4 cm from the lens
I took several shots but,I am not sure if it was in macro or manual focus.
Can it be told in the EXIF data?

These are the camera specs from the Canon web page
Focusing Range
Auto: 0 in./0 cm - infinity (W), 4.6 ft./1.4 m - infinity (T);
Normal: 2.0 in./ 5 cm - infinity (W), 4.6 ft./1.4 m - infinity (T);
Macro: 0 in. - 1.6 ft./ 0 - 50 cm (W)
Manual Focus: 0 in./0 cm - infinity (W), 4.6 ft./1.4 m - infinity (T)

Being new to photography,I have know idea what all that really means,
but it appears to me that,
Macro and manual both have a focusing range down to o",
it appears that both modes will focus down to the same resolution,
effectively,all things being the same, on that scale producing the same photo?
Am I understanding this correctly? and what does (W), (T) stand for?
Thanks,
Brian

I would say that you are understanding it correctly. (W) is for wide angle or the wide end of the lense (which is when you are completely zoomed out). (T) is for telephoto or the long end of the lense (which is when you are zoomed in as far as you the camera can go).
