Traveled here to be met with the worst weather and worst lighting, i was gutted because this was my first try at a long exposure

Try cropping it tighter taking out the sky. Then uses curves to get the original color, red hue, out of it.

Thanks ill try after work. The ND filters i used gave it a really bad color cast

Yep...Landscape 101. When the sky is dead and featureless, its best to leave it out of the composition...all it will do is detract from the image.
