Hi all,

I'm looking for a thumbnail viewer for CR2 files for Win7 64bits. The last post on this topic on the forum was apparently posted in 2009. I have found on the Internet a pay-version.

Do anybody knows about a free version?

Thanks, OL

Your search wasn't very thorough:

What camera are you planning to use it with?

If it is not newer the fastpictureviewer codec pack used to be free(donationware). You can still find the old versions lying around. I have version 1.7 and is works with my 5DMkII, 30d, 40d and S95 files. I can't speak to other cameras.

How about using an image browser instead of a file explorer?

There is no free version. The FastPictureViewer Codec Pack (external link) used to be donationware - but nobody donated so they charge for it now. Older versions can be found, but their distribution is against the license agreement so they are, in effect, pirate software; and it is against PotN policy to provide information on accessing pirate software.

It's only $15, after all.

As we have both stated, it is donationware. However, the license agreement that comes with version 1.7 only prohibits redistribution for commercial purposes. While this may have not been the intention of the author, it is certainly what is written in the agreement.

Based on this information I would say that comments about piracy may be a little too strong.

The license on old versions doesn't change; if it was released as donationware, it is still donationware for that specific release.

http://www.ardfry.com/Products.htm (external link) Is the one I went with.

I always hated opening a program just to view the thumbnails and this one works perfectly, you can view full size preview of the raw too just like a jpeg through windows picture viewer.

Its a bummer Microsoft has the 32bit version but not 64bit version available.

I believe it's Canon's responsibility to provide the 64-bit codec. Although, I've never really delved into this whole issue. But, I had to install the Canon codec in XP in order to view my Raw files.

Question about the third-party apps -- how are they for upgrading for newer cameras?

The problem with the Ardfry codec is that it costs $19.95 just to be able to preview CR2 files. You then have to pay the same amounts for a DNG codec etc. On the other hand, FastPictureViewer gives you nearly 50 codecs for $15, you can even look at Lightroom preview files with FPV.

That was the reason I switched from the Ardfry codec to the FPV codec when I bought the 7D. FPV were admirable in the speed at which they made an upgrade avaiable.

I also use Fastpicture codec, version 1.6 in my case.
Works perfectly on my 32 bit Win XP boxes and my 64 bit Windows 7 PCs.

Although its over a year old it supports my 60D and S95, plus all my older cameras so its very good value for money ;-)a

I find it a lot easier to use Explorer than to have to open another app and then navigate to the relevant folders. As my SD cards open automatically when i put them in the card reader being able to see what all the images are makes life a lot easier.

I didn't know that actually, I figured the $20 wasn't bad for what it offered me. But, looking at everything the FPV does... I think I might just fork over the 15 bucks. Lightroom and PSD previews, thats awesome :)
