I'm trading my Rebel XS in, and I'm trying to decide what'd be the better option. The Rebel T2i seems to have better image quality from the limited amount of research I've done, but the 50D seems to beat the Rebel out in just about every other way. If it were to be your main body, which would you choose?

This is actually exactly the same dilemma I am facing. I started off with either Nikon or Canon, and after many of my amateur and semi pro photographer friends came down about 50 50 either Canon or Nikon, then another friend who is actually one of the top Advertising photographers in the UK said, and I quote, "Nikon are shîte". So that made my mind up to go with Canon.
50D is no longer made so I would have to get second hand, which is not my first choice as you save very little money and have no warranty. So I have decided to get the 550D and some bastard big L lenses ..........

Hmm...after some more research, the 40d seems like an even better option. Better image quality for cheaper, but I need to do more research, still.

Edit: The autofocus is the same on the 40D as it is on the 50D. The 40d looks to be the best option for me. Any objections?

however for sports.. the 40/50d would produce faster fps shots.... so something to think of...

The 40D is a great bargain at current used prices ($450US), but don't expect much increase in image quality if any. I have a 40D and an XTi and they have pretty much identical image quality. I doubt the XS is any worse than the 40D or XTi, and I doubt the 50D or T2i are that much better.

If you're looking for a big jump in image quality then you probably need to look at better lenses before upgrading the camera body. The biggest image quality gain I've gotten with a body upgrade was when I bought my 5D, but you still need good lenses.

do you need video? t2i/t3i
dont care for video? 50d

the t2i is quite capable, i love mine. but sometimes i want the more solid build, and better AF of a XXD or XD body. it takes alot of effort to periodically tell myself i DONT need a 7D

I just bought a 30mm 1.4 lens which is apparently comparable to Canon 35L and superior in some ways, albeit a little worse overall. I don't need video. The improved autofocus of the 40d sounds like it'd be a nice change from the XS. It doesn't have Microadjust like the 50d, though, but it doesn't seem worth the extra money.

The only reason I recently upgraded my 40D was because I needed cleaner high ISO files. The 50D won't get you that and unless you need the higher resolution screen (I didn't) or the micro-adjust (I still have to test this out on my 1D3) then it's a no-brainer to save some cash and go for the 40D. I've had mine for almost three years and have used it to shoot everything from posed portraiture to fast moving animals to sports (soccer outdoors and figure skating with terrible rink lighting). Gymnastics is what finally did me in and honestly, it was a toss up between the 1D3 and just getting a couple really fast primes. I like the versatility of my 70-200 so I went with the body. IMO you can't go wrong with the 40D vs the 50D (unless you really need the above mentioned features).

Depends on your needs. If you need video the T2i is a no brainer, otherwise I would balance resolution to af capabilities/fps.

AF microadjust is indeed not worth the extra money... until you really need it that is. Many (most?) lenses do just fine without microadjust, but I realized I need 50D, because of the AF microadjust feature, after I got my most expensive lens, 135mm f2.0L second hand.

Are you trading in your XS to the Canon Loyalty Program? If it's not broken sell it and put that money towards whatever in that program. Send anything else but don't send in a DSLR unless it's an old original Rebel or 10D or something.

I figured I would just sell it for 200-250 and pay the rest to someone on Craigslist.

Bad idea?

The t2i has a slight edge in IQ and high ISO performance but the 50D has so many things going for it. I used to have a t2i but I found the body was just too small. I had a grip which kind of made it too large.

I was completely happy with the IQ, high iso performance, video and even AF. One thing that I disliked though was the battery life. I know using LiveView will kill a battery but it just seemed like battery life wasn't great.

I ended up selling it for a 50D. Do I regret it? Sometimes but that's only when I think I need hi-def video.

I am happy with my 50D until Canon comes out with a D700 equivalent. It is a perfect balance of size, speed, IQ and performance for the price.
