For all those suggesting the 5D2 has higher IQ than the 1DIV I suggest you re-evaluate your assertions, because it is obvious you've never even held a 1DIV. You're also apparently completely ignoring he obviously wants the focus performance of the faster cameras.

You're not going to change anyone's mind, they've read this on 'trusted' review sites. :p

Those 2 are not that far off, certainly more similar than different.

Obviously, the 5DII doesn't even match the 4 year old 1DsIII in IQ, let alone responsiveness and focusing performance.

My opinion is that I you shoot everything, so you'll be hard pressed to get 'everything' covered perfectly. The 24-70 and 70-200 are both obviously good choices. Maybe consider a 200-400 and zoom it up? I also think a nice prime super-tele is probably one of the smarter investments around if it'll see good use.

Bodies come and go, lens are forever, relatively. I'd go with the 7d and some great lenses you always wished you had owned.

Glad to know that you know exactly what folks have and have not used. Also, if you read back, I am pretty sure that folks are recommending he have both a full frame and crop body. The 7D "obviously" has "the focus performance" that he's looking for.

I'd sell my kidn, er... 1D III to a get a 1D IV.

That said, it could be good to get a 1D III and put the other money towards lenses. Other than your 70-200 II, what gear do you have now?

Just the wife's 7D and an ef-s lens. For what I do I am under the impression that I can cover my needs with a 24-70, 70-200 II, 100 macro 'L' (forgot to list it but, I do have it), a 2X III extender. Will still have close to 2K left for primes.

It is a difficult decision.

I had a chance to shoot a 1D4 at the Kentucky Derby this weekend, courtesy of CPS. I shot it side by side with my 1D3.

The 1D4 was incredible. Focus was spot on and the files are SWEET. Color, contrast, ISO were fantastic. They were great in lightroom, taking clarity and vibrance bumps in a much cleaner way than either my 5D2 or 1D3.

Once I can scare up a $1000 bucks, I'm gonna replace both of my current cameras with a 1D4, and pick up a 60D as a backup.

This space for rent.

5d2 with 24-70/70-200 and a 35L or 85L. not a bad way to spend 7-8k.

Another vote for the IV. I've owned the 7D, 1dIII and currently own the 5DII and the 1DIV. Was never happy with the grain or hit rate with the 7D. The 1DIII was much better than the 7D, but I wanted more MPs. The IV is all I use and does everything extremely well.

Thanks for the info. Looks like the 1D
MK IV is the more preferred option.

Are most people using the 1dmk4 daytime applications with ample light? perhaps there is a separation of users from low light demanding users vs. bright light applications.

The tests I did with my 1dmk3 with 24L vs borrowed 1dmk4 w/ 24L was not worlds apart in IQ in low light halogen lighting late at night in home. The files at ISO 1600 were falling apart on the 1dmk3 and similar looking file at ISO 3200 on the 1dmk4.

alann, not sure if you've seen the documented issues of the 1dmk4 hunting in AI servo in low light. If your not a demanding user then this may pose no issues. I was so eager in using CPS platinum prices to consider buying a 1dmk4 new but I will sit and wait for a different camera body. I know several locals I chat with frequently that are experiencing hunting in low light in ai servo. However they seem to love shooting birds and brightly lit events with that body. My personal conclusion is it may be "body" variations or more than likely "nature of the product".

My guess is many use the 1dmk4 in "one shot" mode in very low light and dont see the hunting issues.
