I have a 2010 Macbook Pro and I love. I honestly don't see a reason to upgrade but it would be nice to have a larger screen to work on.

I thought about getting the 27" Apple display, I know many people might disagree, but for my needs I think the colors are good enough out of the box and I'm happy with the way my prints turn out.

However, I don't know if I can justify spending $1000 on a monitor when $700 more can get me a new computer.

If I got the new computer, I think that more likely than not, my work photography work will be done exclusively on the new computer.

But, if I wanted to start my work on a laptop and move them over to the iMac, how would I stream line everything using Lightroom. Is an External HDD the way to go?

Thanks

If you don't have the need for heavy work on a laptop, you can do what you want with an iMac and iPad. Upload photos on location to the iPad, rate, and edit EXIF on the go, then transfer to the iMac for editing. My MBP see's little use (except web and email) now that I have a desktop. I'm tempted to pick up an iPad for this reason.

But back to your original question, it is easy to sync the two computers together in LR. It took me a while to find the solution when I first started with my desktop, but its worked well since.

The process:
1. Export file(s) as catalog
2. Move catalog to second computer
3. Import Catalog (will adjust edits and EXIF to match)
4. Done!

I just use an external, USB hard drive; store the photos and catalog on the hard drive and just installed LR on my home and work boxes. Then I can just open the catalog on either machine and everything is how I left it.

Every couple of weeks or so, I copy the entire thing onto a large backup drive.

I think I am going to try a similar thing on my NAS. All my pictures are there anyways. I have a macbook pro and pc and would like to be able to edit on both as my pc has a 24" monitor.
