Anybody has this combo? Can you guys please comment on the bouncing capability (normal inside house shots, maybe 10-12ft high ceiling) and fill flash capability using this? Reason im asking is because im selling off all my gear but do not want to be without a camera. I still have a 580 that i havent sold yet thinking that i might just keep that and pair with the g12, but im trying to cut down the size, im imagining that the 580 is somewhat double the size of the g12 maybe bigger, so if the 270 is just as capable then im just get that and let the 580 go.

The combo works well for me.

Just thinking here, would it be possible to manually dial down the output of your 580 to simulate the output/GN of the 270 so you could do some test shots for yourself?

My experience (270EX and G11) is that at ISO 80 or 100 with bounce flash and a high ceiling, this may result in a somewhat underexposed shot, although not so bad that it can't be recovered in Lightroom (shooting RAW). Bumping up to ISO 200 in those situations helps. For me the 270 is so small and light that it is worth the trade-off.

Also, using bounce flash in that sort of situation takes everything the 270 has got, so recycle time can be a bit slow, especially as the batteries start to wear down.

How about if i keep the iso at 400-800? I usually do iso 400-800 w/ f/5.6 with my 7D, if i use that setting, will i have a good iq if after i process it in dpp i size it down to web size around 1200-1500 pix on the longest side?

I have the G 12 and recently bought the 430 EX 11 flash.....bigger, more punch than the 270, smaller, less power than the 580.

It's heavy....not as much as the 580...but it works well.

Im not currently considering a 430 right now. Only the 270. If im gonna use a 430, might as well slap my 580 for a full 360 swivel. Im trying to stay compact. Thanks for the input though.

I have both 580 II and the original 270, the latter bought primarily for my G10. I find the 270 quite punchy for its size and well able to ceiling bounce provided the height is less than 10ft. I like it so much that I occasionally pack it with my DSLRs if I want to travel really light (one lens, one body combo). But the lack of head swivel can occasionally be a real pain.

Thanks for that xhack. Do u have any pics using the 270 bounced that u can share? Id like to see its capabilities. Mounted on the g series with exif is better. I already anticipated the problems its gonna give me with a lack of swivel so i might just keep shooting in landscape orientation.

What Rimmer said. I have the G12 / 270ex and in semi-low light, you may have trouble bouncing with 10-12 foot ceilings, but turning up the ISO slightly does do the trick.

musashi - in direct response, I shot three s***-off-a-shovel pics in a room 18'x16'. All SOOC, except for reducing to 600 on long dimensiion. Inadvertently shot at -1.3EV. Duh. EXIF should be there . . .

I drew the curtains to give minimal ambient light in the first example. All shot at ISO 80. First flash shot is standing, so only 3 feet to ceiling. Second flash is kneeling, to give around 6 feet to ceiling.

Looks good xhack! And thats iso 80, so i'm thinking I can still get more out of the flash if I go like iso 400. Thanks for the samples I really appreciate it, thats what i've looking for. Now i'm ready to buy, just have to wait for a good timing to get the best price.

Another thing regarding my G 12 and 430...which would also be an issue, but moreso with the 580.

These are not compact flashes and when attached to a diminutive camera like the G 12....there is a balance issue that you're always conscious of....I handle the combo...430+ G12 sometimes by the flash body...always have the neck strap around my neck, in case it slips out of my grasp.

I do like having a powerful flash (either 430/580)....it does get away from portability...but a 'proper sized' flash can really add to your picture.

I carry my G12 and my 430 flash in a regular sized , older video bag. This is my daily carry around equipment.

But the G12 is in my small Kata bag and then in the old video bag.

If I don't need the 430...I leave the bag and 430 in the car....in an old cooler in the trunk....remember heat is a killer in the summer.

I then just carry around the portable in the Kata bag...or sometimes sans Kata bag.

The video bag is the base unit.

Complicated but works for me.

For serious pictures....I use one of my DSLR (Pentax...sorry..:D ) bodies and have around 7 lenses for those bodies.

Lesmore, I understand where youre coming from, believe me, if i didn't have to let all my gear go, I probably wouldn't even consider buying a compact. but it is what it is. My goal for right now is to have a decent flash, smaller the better, cheaper the better, to improve the indoor photos. But if my flash haven't sold by the time I get the G12 and 270, i'm gonna use them together and if the difference is night and day for me, then I might return the 270 and keep the 580.

I figure you saw my 570 thread but if not.

The flash bracket I found actually folds flat for storage and takes up very little space in the bag.

I was going to also add that for me I would hang onto the 580 and get an ste2 trigger to use it off camera when possible. I've found it a very versatile combination.

Have fun

My experience is that my G11 is a bit too noisy for my taste at ISO 800. Of course, that depends quite a bit on the subject and the exposure. Under the conditions you have proposed I think that ISO 200 should be adequate, or ISO 400 at the most, to get a good bounce flash exposure with the 270EX.
