Rimmer --- Lower iso sounds even better! Now im just looking around for an aafes discount code and im ready to buy!

Pwdieter --- i have seen that pic, although it looks very very useful, it makes it so much bigger and looks cumbersome to carry around. Where did you get it? I might still look into it. If it doesnt cost much, i will consider putting this and an ettl cord in the bag for those just in case moments.

I got it at a local photo chain for a bit less than the link below. It isn't a casual set up for sure, I use it when I'm going to be shooting a grip and grin event or such. As you can see in the link though when collapsed for storage it's quite compact. the other thing I do is just put on the ste2 and carry the flash in my other hand with a bounce diffuser on it.

I have the errl cord but it almost never comes out since I have the ste2. For me I'd rather put up with the overly bulky combination of the larger flash on occasion to have it around when I want to set up something close to studio lighting with the remote trigger and a light stand. your mileage may vary. I would certainly consider getting a second smaller flash for on camera as well as setting up as a second remote slave, but I wouldn't get rid of the more powerful unit.

U got me thinking there, but see i never got the hang of using 2 lights even with me using my 7D and 2 580. But who knows, i might just keep my 580. Thanks for the very valuable info, i really appreciate it.

Musashi,

I know you are looking at flash and the G 12 right now. But one thing I've been doing a lot of is using the low light, low ISO..80,100...160 ...photography.

I have a film '52 Leica 11f rangefinder (30 odd years now) and I used to love doing low available light, low ISO photography with it.

The little G12 reminds me of a rangefinder (in looks) and I'm finding it's a good little tool for low light, low ISO film. Tripod...use a table base...for foundations...or just practice holding steady.

I mention this only as an additional type of photography over and above flash.

Les

You know what, i never even thought about putting it on top of the table! Learn something new again. I might have try that sometime. But, if i go low iso w/ a smaller f-stop, wouldn't that slow my shutter speed so low that im gonna get ghosting or blur? Or am i totally misunderstanding your post?

depends on what you are shooting of course. but that ghosting/blur can be a useful effect at times too.

But I'd love to see what Les has got going on.

I rarely cary a tripod these days but shoot long exposures all the time. I set the camera on rocks, railings, the ground, what ever.

here's on a rock

PWdieter's pix is better than I can do....wonderful picture...thumbs up...but that's what I'm talking about...lower ISO for better quality pix....use a stable foundation to avoid as much blur through using low shutter speed.

Photography is always a compromise...with iso...shutter speed...depth of field, etc....but what a challenge, eh !

What an amazing photograph. Well done.

I'm still a bit confused as to the right flash for the G12. I realize the 270 EX II looks like the right size in comparison to the camera. I'm leaning toward the 430 EX II because of the extra power and swivel feature, but I am a bit concerned that it's too much and will make the camera unwieldy. I'm guessing I'll be using a tripod when I'm using the flash, but I'm not quite sure. I just recently purchased two setups using Lensmate adapters so I will really need to buy an external flash soon. I'm sure I'll use it outdoors in some settings to fill in shadows etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

OK.. I'm a newbie and it shows. The photo to which I'm referring is the one pwdieter posted (the sunset/sunrise over the ocean). What an amazing shot...

I just stumbled across this post. I have an old 220EX. It is a perfect size for the G12 (originally purchased for a G3). I would ave bought a 270EXII had they existed at the time. I recently purchased a 430EXII. It is simply too massive for the G12, IMHO. I use the 430EXII only off-camera with a cable. Have you looked at the YongNou flashes, especially the YN468. It has ETTL capabilities (on camera) and I think Hi-Speed Sync too. It is less than $100.00 from Amazon. Probably cheaper on Ebay. I am simply more comfortablle dealing with Amazon than China. I have no interest in Amazon nor is this an ad for them.
