My mum bought herself this camera a few years ago and gave it to me last Christmas. While at her house in Berlin, I took some very clear, really gorgeous photos. The moment I got home, however, I proceeded to attempt to take the same quality of photos of my kitten. For some completely bizarre reason, all the photos show up heavily pixelated, really dark or just generally fuzzy and out of focus.
Keeping in mind I don't know that much about cameras (almost nothing, really), but have tried changing every setting, taking photos at different times of day, inside and outside in all kinds of weather (been trying to take photos out in my garden since the weather picked up), but simply cannot replicate the quality of the photos I took in Berlin over Christmas. I just can't understand this. For a comparison, here are two photos:
Photo from Berlin:

Photo from home, the day I got back, so same settings, similar light, etc:
The second photo is actually better than what I usually get, but I haven't managed to get anything near the quality of the first photo, which is a huge disappointment. Any tips on whether or not I'm just doing something wrong or if this is deterioration of the camera or something would be hugely appreciated.
In addition, using rechargable AA's, this camera eats batteries like some kind of ravenous monster. I'm talking 15 minutes of taking photos and it's dead. My sister had the same camera, same age as mine and said it did the same thing. Is this just a general problem with the model? Can I fix this by using different batteries?
