That looks more like lens distortion rather than an uneven camera. In #2 the line above his head is horizontal but the lines lower down aren't. If you tried to straighten the angles it would be even more distorted. The images need distortion correction in Photoshop or a similar image editor.

Great shots! If they were my photos i'd fix the slightly angled photos of #2 and 4

I like 'em!

I understand why you cropped the last one as you did (to include the integral part of the grraduate pointing skyward)...but man, that kid's face behind him is distracting. Especially since he is looking right at the camera. Not sure what to do about it however. Maybe masking and blurring the background a little more?

This is the worst part about that picture, but I'm guessing it was just because I was standing on the field and so I got that guys attention pointing right at him and it kills me because he is looking RIGHT at me.

Thank you everyone for all the C&C, I'm taking every single bit of it in and appreciate it all!

Drew

What do you need explained?

I was hoping you could explain the whole "mugshot" or "hostage video" comment which was then followed up by the whole reference to a friend being a Sociology professor at ECU.

When you did explain your objection to a brick wall (which I agree with), it had nothing to do with a "hostage video". I'm just curious as to the social context you are referring to.

Thanks!

I didn't read it as having a "social context". Ever seen a hostage video? Captors generally take the video directly in front of a blank wall or hung sheet so no one can identify their whereabouts. Same as sayng don't use flat lighting or it will look like a DMV photo.

East Carolina University is the place where the shots were taken. East Carolina University = ECU.

Perhaps you are reading more into it than the poster intended.

Unwatermarked because they are from the copies I gave to him...but here are some examples of other places I used at the university since everyone was suggesting different places.

Admittedly I wrote in a short hand manner so my comment was probably cryptic to some, which was certainly not my intention. Mugshots, hostage videos, drivers' license photos, etc. and usually shot against a wall with little separation between the subject and background so its wise to avoid that "look" whenever possible. Its one of the things that separate snapshots from photographic portraiture. I subsequently looked at the poster's Flickr stream and he had many other photos with much more pleasing backgrounds than some of those posted here.

There was no "social context" to my comment. When I noticed that the photos were taken at East Carolina University I simply mentioned as an aside that a close friend is a department head there. That comment wasn't in any way related to the first sentence.

Thanks for clarifying! I did read way too far into it. :)

Thanks
