It looks like less like a GF2 w/ VF and more like a 16MP G2 to me.
Not bashing on you for posting, just saying it seems like a boring upgrade to the G2.
Boring/exciting depends on what you're looking for, right? Improvements over the G2:
- Better image quality rivaling and surpassing in some ways the GH2
- Improved touchscreen interface (can put AF point anywhere, not just a set number of predetermined spots--I think it was limited on the G2 but could be wrong)
- AF speed almost as fast as GH2 (uses same AF processor)
- Faster continuous shooting frame rate
- +/- 5EV exposure compensation (nice!)
- More video options (not interesting to me, but it's an improvement)
I'm sure there are some operational niceties in there that I missed too. You do lose some buttons and dials, but how much that matters again depends on how you use it. At least one of the big sites (DPR, Imaging Resource) says that the touchscreen interface is the best they've ever seen and largely makes up for the missing buttons. The removed buttons and grip change are the only 2 things that should give a G2 owner pause in terms of upgrading. GF2 owners looking for a shorter profile with EVF should have no problems at all since the size and shape are roughly the same (minus the VF hump of course) and the interface is similar but better actually with an extra dial and button.
For me the G3 is getting pretty close to the ideal m4/3 camera in terms of capitalizing on m4/3s size advantage, improved image quality, fast AF, good interface, small enough and less bulky due to the redesigned grip, and an attractive price at $699 with kit lens--it really hits a lot of high notes. The one thing I wish it had which it can't ever have is IBIS. I'm also not entirely convinced on the placement of buttons on the back (for instance if I want Fn.1 to be AF, it looks like it's in an awkward spot for that), but really I think there's finally a m4/3 camera I can recommend without hesitation to my friends and family.
