From a professional photog stand point no. But for someone that wants a more portable system. This is essentially the GF2 with viewfinder. Might appeal to lots of other people.

It looks like less like a GF2 w/ VF and more like a 16MP G2 to me.

Not bashing on you for posting, just saying it seems like a boring upgrade to the G2.

I almost had my hopes up when I say this. I've been looking for a good PnS or EVIl camera but this is too large. Wish the darn Samsung NX100 had a built in flash! GRR!

For me its intriguing. I want a smaller tote camera. But so far none of the 4/3 have the IQ that I would like. But maybe I just have to get used to that, unless I consider the NEX or NX line.

I'm really excited about the NX system, but they are still using that Pentax K20 sensor which is a couple generations behind Sony at this point. If they can beg or borrow a good sensor, I'm all over it. m4/3 doesn't have enough fast lenses for me, and Sony doesn't have any lenses at all. NX has some cool small primes already and some pro-grade bigger lenses on the roadmap for next year.

If Sony would release a fast, smallish 35mm lens and 24mm lens (giving me the FoV of 50mm and 35mm) I'd be all over the NEX series.

What about Minolta lenses?

I have to agree with you. A nice Sigma 28 1.8 would do fine.

What about Minolta lenses?

You mean Maxxum lenses? Sony has Alpha/Maxxum mount lenses, but Who wants to buy a compact body only to adapt big lenses with a big adapter?

Here's what a smallish 50mm f1.8 looks like on the NEX:

Boring/exciting depends on what you're looking for, right? Improvements over the G2:

  • Better image quality rivaling and surpassing in some ways the GH2
  • Improved touchscreen interface (can put AF point anywhere, not just a set number of predetermined spots--I think it was limited on the G2 but could be wrong)
  • AF speed almost as fast as GH2 (uses same AF processor)
  • Faster continuous shooting frame rate
  • +/- 5EV exposure compensation (nice!)
  • More video options (not interesting to me, but it's an improvement)
I'm sure there are some operational niceties in there that I missed too. You do lose some buttons and dials, but how much that matters again depends on how you use it. At least one of the big sites (DPR, Imaging Resource) says that the touchscreen interface is the best they've ever seen and largely makes up for the missing buttons. The removed buttons and grip change are the only 2 things that should give a G2 owner pause in terms of upgrading. GF2 owners looking for a shorter profile with EVF should have no problems at all since the size and shape are roughly the same (minus the VF hump of course) and the interface is similar but better actually with an extra dial and button.

For me the G3 is getting pretty close to the ideal m4/3 camera in terms of capitalizing on m4/3s size advantage, improved image quality, fast AF, good interface, small enough and less bulky due to the redesigned grip, and an attractive price at $699 with kit lens--it really hits a lot of high notes. The one thing I wish it had which it can't ever have is IBIS. I'm also not entirely convinced on the placement of buttons on the back (for instance if I want Fn.1 to be AF, it looks like it's in an awkward spot for that), but really I think there's finally a m4/3 camera I can recommend without hesitation to my friends and family.

I'd definitely give them a look once they start filling out their lens range. There's a 24mm on the roadmap, but if people have correctly identified it in the mockup photos I've seen it'll be a big lens, which to me defeats the purpose of these mirrorless systems.

I agree, big lens on a compact body is silly. But the NEX doesn't have built in flash either =( I want fujifilm to release a x200 or something with interchangeable lenses... or just lower the price on the X100 :D

I'd be down with a cheaper X100! Beautiful as the files are, it has some operational quirks and flaws that are tough for me to justify on a $1200 camera. Make that, oh say, an $800 camera and we'll talk ;) I can put up with a lot if I don't feel I'm being overcharged for the privilege.

NEX's lack of built-in flash is just the current state of affairs. I'm sure they'll have a bigger body that is less obsessed with being anorexic that has a built-in flash soon enough. The ability or lack thereof to downsize the lenses is what worries me. Olympus is supposed to have a 12mm f/2 for m4/3 out soon (24mm equivalent), and it'll probably be much smaller than a 24mm f/2 on FF. I can't say that NEX lenses can be shrunk to anywhere near the same extent, which again to me makes the tiny camera pointless.

The NEX has APS-C going for it. I have yet to see a m4/3 that has acceptable IQ. I have used several from my friends. I soon hope to try out the GH2. Because of the small sensor, the m4/3 people shy away from upping the MP which is fine with me. The G3 may be just good enough for me.

I am looking for a small kit and don't know if I can make something like a T3i small enough.
