These are a few from an opportunistic shoot of the Morgan Heritage show at the 20th annual St. Lucia Jazz Fest. I had actually flown in as a member of the Taj Weekes and Adowa crew to shoot their show, do some new promo pics of the band, sponsor merchandise pics, and shoot a music video for a single from their latest release. As it turns out, our engineer is in tight with Morgan Heritage and my credentials gave me access so I was able to do this show as well for the guys. Let me start by saying what an amazing show. 2.5 non-stop hours of reggae bliss, high energy, and mighty vibes! All images were shot with the 1D MkIII/70-200 f2.8 II combo and a 580EX.

Pretty good ambient - flash balance.
But why the flash?

Okay set, with the exception of #4, which is OoF.

I'd have preferred a bit more variation though.

Thanks for the feedback Rene. I have been playing with ambient/flash balance more and more and guess I just liked the pop it gave the artists. As noted, I did do some without flash (5 and 8) but I found it was hard to pull out shadows without getting super hot on the faces with the stage lighting most of the time so I mainly shot flash to get around that.

Can you offer me any suggestions on how to mix it up more? I agree that much of my concert work looks way too similar at times.

Use a wide(r) lens, frame much closer or tighter, use different angles, try to use negative space, stuff like that.

I'll post some from the Taj Weekes show where I did use some wider stuff. I also ditched some of the negative space in the crops but your point is very well taken. thanks Rene.
