Back in my early days of film, I had a slide copier that attached to my Canon AE-1 camera. You would remove the lens and this tube (looking like a telephoto lens) with a Canon mount system would just go on the camera. You would just put a slide in the end and point it at a good light source and shoot. It made nearly perfect copies (or film negatives) from the original slide.

Does anyone know whether one of these devices are still available for a Rebel or 5DII ??

The challenge today is that often folks own an APS-C body, and they want to copy a 135 format slide...which is a size reduction and not a 1:1 duplicate. So you need to make sure that you buy a copier which can provide other reproduction scales, not merely 1:1

Some are available, but I have not assessed any of them...some use cheapo optics.

Just found this:

Might be cheapo optics for sure, but could work for me to copy my 1000 or so slides from long ago . . .

This 2008 article from Pop Photo makes the use of such duplicators seem to be a bad method, for the reason which I previously stated....copying 24x36mm image to 15x22mm digital frame size.

Judging solely by reviews of buyers, this product might not have the issue with copying 135 slides to APS-C dSLR

http://www.amazon.com …tal-Cameras/dp/B000EQ24Z4 (external link)

OTOH, one reviewer states, "Unfortunately the manufacturer fails to tell you that you cannot copy the full size of the 35mm. slide with the standard lens. A wide black border surounds the image when it is digitized."

Since I only have 1000 or so to copy, I should look to rent one perhaps? I could use the better scanner version then. I just can't stand having those slides hanging out in my drawer and not have any good way to see them. Projector is long ago broken/gone.

Sorry, don't have a good solution for you. Whether optically reproduced or digital scanned, the need for meticulous cleaning of the slides is important. Here is an example of what happens when you don't clean the slide, and you scan (even using software which has dust reduction!)

Yeah, its been dozens of years since I've really looked at them. Probably dusty and dirty. I just don't want to lose pics of the early years of the kids and all . . .
