Sorry, in a jam so limited to time spent researching. Was asked to record a funeral of a friend tomorrow as some family can not make it and trying it out tonight for the first time (new to it and was just given notice). I have a 16gb card an no matter what setting I put the video at i only get ~12.5 minutes of recorded video. The camera then stops, screen goes in hibernate (black), etc.

The card is a Sandisk Extreme 400x. I have a 32gb Transcend 400x also... Would really appreciate the input...

That's all you're going to get at one rip...

Built in limitation I'm afraid.

It has to do with that fact that the CF cards are formated in FAT and there is a limit to the file size. By recording at a smaller resolution, you will get a longer video because the file size will be smaller.

Can the camera/recording be stopped and then restarted for another 12.5 minutes?

My 7D is in the mail headed to the house.:)

You can restart it but AFAIK, it will stop for good (or at least a while) if it starts to overtemp...

If you want more than 4gb/12.5minutes continuous recording... then go with a camcorder.

Yeah you can start another movie.... just sux it only last a certain time period. As it would be nice for continous. I also dont get a meter showing it to hit buffer issues. It also doesnt matter what resolution i put at (only tested the top 3) I get the same 12 minutes of play...

bah humbug on the camcorder lol... I have a 2 camcorder system someone is lending for the occasion so i'll be set one way or the other. The DSLR just shoots a higher res video. Can one record straight to laptop some how and not have this limitation? just curious. I see the camera has 4Gb limitation... :(

You may bah humbug the camcorder now... but when the camcorder autofocuses with much better ease than the DSLR, you might withdraw the humbugness.

Don't get me wrong... DSLR video quality is very nice. I use it frequently to capture my little boy. And if you've got the patience and skill set, you can make very nice videos/movies. Manual focus is good because objects/people crossing in front of the camera won't ever throw off focus. But that also means moving subjects are going to be challenging to keep in focus if you lack the experience. Not to mention the 12.5min of video = 4gb... that chews up storage faster than chubby kid at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

For me the 12.5 minutes is more than enough for that quick video in between shooting stills shots. Have two video cameras (sd/digi tape) for shooting kids plays, weddings and such stuff.

I heard that it has to do with some legality issue. In order for it to be sold as a 'still camera w/ video capabilities' rather than 'camcorder,' it couldn't continuously record over a certain length of time. And i think 12 mins was the number.

Not saying you are wrong, cause i do know about the 4gb limit in fat.

Also these chips would probably overheat by the time you reached 30 mins

I think this is a wives tale. Or at least it doesn't apply to sales in the US.

Both my camcorders take stills using an SD card by switching to the still picture mode.

I have also heard that the sensors have a thermal shutdown on them, as they heat up during constant input. Honestly, the little flip style cameras are being dumped for cheap. I know the lenes is not there, but I would consider grabbing one of those as a backup.
