Hey, gang!

Some new birds showed up around my place, all colorful with yellow and orange (at least the male) and I wasn't sure what they were.

I got some shots but at the distance even though I had the 100-400 with the 1.4x TC on my 1D3, these are still all about 100% crops, but seemed to come out OK.

So, anyone have a quick ID? I don't recognize them and can't find my birding book right now to even try:(!

The male:

Two different species.

The first few are a Western Tanager and the last one is a Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Really? I was sure they were a male and female of something since they both showed up at the same time -- thanks for the help!!!

Tony - I ran into some yellow-rumped warblers for the first time at Steigerwald Lake. I'd love to find a Western Tanager. Both pretty birds and nicely captured.

Dave, what was so surprising was that they both showed up at the same time and were flitting around the same tree. And that Western Tanager is so dang colorful!

I wish I had a longer lens -- even with the 560mm focal length this shows how little reach I could get:

Oh, and Steigerwald is an interesting place -- I never even knew it existed until December of '09 when I saw a notice of a guy working with the Fish and Wildlife Dept. and the Audobon Society who was hosting a winter walk and bird-spotting outing. I met up with him and a couple other hardy souls -- it was in the later stages of a freeze here -- I was the only one with a camera instead of binoculars. Unfortunately, there wasn't a whole lot of activity.

He did have quite a story, though -- the week before he had been up to Ridgefield WLR, a place that had been a regular "hangout" for me. In the deep freeze, all the wetlands were iced over. Well, he said that a bunch of ducks had actually been frozen into the ice, and the area bald eagles were all over that, feasting on the ducks -- that must have been an amazing sight! And by then the thawing had begun, and I never made it up there with my gear, Dang!
