Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the area West of Naciemento, but it's one of the more remote parts of California and I'm not sure you'll find many people who are. Just from the Google Maps Satellite view it looks like the Heart Castle Rd route between the Castle and Burnett Creek Road is unpaved, and possibly trail-like. Hearst Castle Road between the visitor center and the Castle, I do know, is closed to non-official vehicles. I'd imagine the back side is similarly closed off.

Fort Hunter Liggett is in a small valley, so it's easy travelling. But travelling West from there is pretty rough terrain, crossing the Coastal Range of mountains. It may be a fun drive trying to ply your way through the area, but I'd go with a backup plan that took me around Lake Naciemento on Interstate Road, through "Adelaida" whatever that is (I was there a couple years ago, I don't remember anything other than wineries there), and then cutting over on Klau Mine Road / Cypress Mountain Drive to Santa Rosa Creek Road, which will take up through Cambria.

Any way you work it, I'm jealous of your trip, because it sounds like fun and I love being out in remote areas like that.

If I had any other unwarranted advice to offer, it'd be to bring a GPS, and to get started early in the day. This is an excellent time of year to be travelling here (despite our recent out-of-season storms, they'll hopefully be gone soon) since the days are starting so early and lasting so late into the night.

Not a single photo on page 1 -- what travesty!

Here's a photo from right off Santa Rosa Creek Road, facing East-ish at 8am:

ISO 100, f/11 @ 1/13 seconds. Shot with the Zeiss 50mm makro-planar on the 5D2. I had some filters on the lens, I don't remember exactly which but likely candidates include a CPL and a GND.

And here's one from the Hearst Castle gardens (we took tour #4, the garden tour):

ISO 100, f/11 @ 1/250 seconds, again with the Zeiss 50mm. Handheld, no filters.

bior, thank you so much for continuing to respond in this thread. Those photos are beautiful! I'll make sure to post a few on here when we get back.

We will have a GPS with us and we are printing out turn by turn directions. I just hope we aren't rushing ourselves too much. I want to take my sweet a** time to stop and take as many photos as I see fit.

Here's the updated route we are going to take.

You are welcome, and the revised route looks excellent!

OK, so we just got back from our Cali trip. A bit more rainy and cold than expected... It was still beautiful though. I'm loading the photos as I'm typing this.

Wanted to let you guys know that if you need to take the alternate route like I took to get up to Big Sur from Hearst Castle, make sure you have a pretty strong stomach and don't mind hairpin turns on a road that is barely wide enough for 1 car to fit, let alone 2! Nacimiento-Ferguson road was insane! The good thing is that we did the entire thing during the day. That didn't stop the rain and fog from appearing at the very top of the mountain though. We couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of us and it literally looked like we were up in the clouds when I dared glimpse over the edge. I thought Hwy 1 was a bit hairy at times, but this road takes the cake.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention our rental car. For some reason Hertz gave us a Nissan Altima Hybrid with GPS built in. That car was AMAZING on gas. We literally put $50 total into the car the entire 10 days we were driving around. I guesstimate that we drove around 700 mi total.

Wow, sounds like fun. I'm glad you guys had a good time, despite the "interesting" weather. I'm eager to see the photos!

d'oh! We definitely went the wrong week. As soon as we got back it started getting warm and sunny...

I gotta say, I extremely dislike all of you that get to enjoy the scenery in CA every day. We are editing our photos and I'm pretty sure you can't take a bad shot of anything out there.
